I have added a firewire card on my PC (about 5 years old), but it has USB1 not USB2.
Is it possible to connect a USB2 external hard drive to a firewire connection via some kind of different cable?

unfortunately this is not possible. usb and frewire are comletely different technologies. the easiest way to add usb2 to your pc would be using a controller card like this one,

If your machine does not have an inteface faster than USB 1.0then I'm afraid that is simply a limitation. There is no way of increasing the harware capability.
