well, i use AVG free antivirus, it seems to be pretty good, perfectly fine as long as you keep your wits about you and dont click everything which says 'click here for a free iphone' never had any virus problems, this is on xp aswell which afaik isn't as secure as vista or windows 7 (assuming you're on one of those)

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good free one, and better than AVG.
I would say that ESET Smart Security is the best paid for AV, im using it right now.

Agreed only because this is my recommendation I gave him! ;)
Free and uses minimal resources and is unobtrusive. MS all the way here. Nod 32 was fine but you pay for it.

Am using AVG Free on my PC at the moment but the rest in the house are running MSE, as soon as i do a fresh install i'll be using it too...seems pretty **** good where as i had AVG trying to tell me recently that the .exe of Thunderbird i had just d/loaded from the Mozilla site was a random Trojan with a name that wasn't recognised anywhere.

AVG is terrible IMO very bloaty abd obtrusive. You should not notice AV software.
On a personal note, the last time I had a computer virus was 1995. Nothing beats common sense.

I use Kaspersky Internet Security on some computers, and Microsoft Security Essentials on others - I find that they are both very good. I think I read that the main difference between MSE and something like Kaspersky is that Kaspersky is a two way firewall, whereas MSE (and the associated windows firewall) is a one way firewall.
I believe the MSE firewall stops stuff coming in, and the Kaspersky et al firewall restricts incoming and outgoing traffic.
I think with the MSE firewall the malware and anti-cirus, etc are deisgned to stop any programs from getting to the point of being able to send anything outwards anyway - or so I think from my memory (Point - this may need clarifying).
I shall try and find the link to the info I read this on, to try and make the matter clearer, unless of course one of the brainy guys like SnakeDoc or System7 happen to be able to draw it from memory!

Windows Firewall and MSE from Vista onward will block outgoing applications as well. They are two way. XP's was only one way IIRC. This is why you will sometimes get (Vista W&) those pop ups asking if you want to allow a certain program to access the web

My apologies, after some research SnakeDoc is definitely correct, correct about the XP being inbound only as well.
I couldnt find the page on MS I read that mistakenly led me to believe it was one way only - so perhaps it was a result of too much Christmas cheer a couple of weeks ago!
Cheers SnakeDoc.

i use McAfee Advanced Security, came free with my mum's broadband package with BT Option 3.
it's called BT NetProtect Plus
had no problems so far, and doesn't continously ask for Virus scans or anything like that.

I use Norton AntiVirus only because I get it free, was getting to be a massive resource hog but since the 2009 edition it's quite fast and unobtrusive again

I use NOD32, In my opinion it's detected more viruses than any other anti-virus i've purchased.
