Hi

I have a new motherboard ASUS M2N SLI Deluxe and Novatech Nvidia 8800GTS Graphics card, AMD 6000 AM2 plus memory and 530W power supply.

I have added my old hard drives (IDE) and DVD but when attempting to start the old XP will not boot, and when attempting to use the XP install CD it comes up with the screen "windows will now examine your PC" or something like that then proceeds no further.

The XP CD works on other PCs and the drives used here when put back into the original setup. Is there likely to be a hardware error here either with the CPU, motherboard or GPU ?

Or is there a BIOS update/power supply issue ?

Which BIOS version do you currently have.

The BIOS is 0903

This could be caused by incorrect setting within the BIOS.

Please could you restore BIOS to defaults.

Change BIOS setting to boot from CD. Do not change anything else at thie time.

Boot from XP CD and see if it still hangs at the same point. Please allow system a little bit of time as sometimes it can hang at this point for a few minutes before moving on depending on system setup.

You could also try removing any hardware that is not needed at thie precise moment in time while we work out what is causing the hang.

Ok I've reset the machine to it's original BIOS, and only changed the boot from CD.

Removed everything from it apart from the DVD, the Nvidia Graphics card, mouse, keyboard, and on/off switches.

The system still hangs at the same point of inspecting the machine specification. :(

I have also tried on different DVD drive & XP install disc to check it was not those.

Wondering now whether I should try updating the BIOS to see if this can resolve the issue.

Otherwise would I be right to assume that there is a fault with one of the new components ?

Well I think I may of resolved this problem.

Seems the new motherboard won't work with a western digital IDE 160GB drive.

I've added an old 60GB and that is ok, incidently will work with a large IDE of 320GB, and changing setting on BIOS to large changed nothing. Rather odd but at least the rest a present seems ok.

Touch wood while I continue to install XP.
