As some of you may have heard Intel are entering the discrete graphics market in 2008 what does anyone make of this? opinions...

I have always found Intel Intergrated graphics to be very good adaptors for what they are.
It will be interesting to see what they can come up with in the discrete market.
Really if there going to do this they need to build cards for a market thats already sown up by ATI and Nvidia. So not sure how well they are going to do here.
However Intel is a big company with a lot of money. They might just be able to pull this off.
Of course we all know this is because AMD bought ATI and Intel could not get its hands on Nvidia, so next best start your own graphics card line!

i bet if nvidia/intel teamed up their would be killer hardware. but i doubt that'll happen..

obviously not and it would be good and bad, it would probably cripple and/or bankrupt AMD and ATI resulting in intel and nvidia being able to charge whatever prices they want and a lack of competitive new hardware releases, either way the consumer loses

yep, but either way amd have got hard times ahead. falling behind in the cpu game, with there new chip looking like a big flop, and the x2900 chips not looking too great.
and thats before the nvidia price cuts and intels new cores :S

the new ati card does exactly what it says on the tin (aka beats the 640mb 8800gts but gets beaten by the gtx for less than the price of the gts) and ati's chip can be used for a lot more (stream processing number crunching etc.) and i dont think AMD r going for direct competetition with intel anymore because they know they cant win that way and so are branching off and using ati for fusion which will present a different option for upgradeability and cheap computers

after the price cuts 8800gts should be the same price as the 2900. so, what would you do?
get a portable heater that uses some crazy amount of power
or
an 8800gts 640mb?
JDowdall

driver updates anyone considering that a driver update cut the sound im sure they can so something with the heat and the power and what are your on sources on these "price cuts" :D and dont say common sense

hey, you may get a heater, and the prices will be the same, but with the 2900xt, you get hl2, hl2 dm, and all these other games from steam for free
teknokid
12-06-2007, 05:12 PM
hehe,
it was from g80 re-sellers (evge etc) and was news on most big IT sites.
hehe, yeah, the 2900xt would've been amazing, if 8800gts/x weren't already out and had been for 6 months!

12-06-2007, 05:20 PM
if they came out same time and same price i feel they wud b pretty even with the x2900 just comin out on top but obviously they didnt do nvidia has won this round
teknokid
12-06-2007, 05:54 PM
nah, even at same time nvidia would win!.

12-06-2007, 05:58 PM
and your not amd/ati? :S?
JDowdall
12-06-2007, 06:20 PM
im not ati/amd fanboy why have i got a intel c2d then? lol and i give credit where credit is due i mean i openly admit that the 7600gs and gt are running the lower end and that the 7900gs is very close on the x1950pro's heels by beating it at overclocking its just i believe that the x2900 is a step in the right direction in keeping up with the times and being more future proof where more gpgpu etc technologies are going to be used more

12-06-2007, 06:22 PM
yep, its just a shame that with triple the shaders the 2900 coulnt beat the 8800gtx, good for me though :)
on another note, the 8900gtx (due in nov/dec) will be 3x the speed of 8800gtx, now thats ownage!

oh unless thats the graphics card i've been hearing about that comes with its own free nuclear power plant to give it the juice it needs

no!, its supposed to be happening, this november :)

i will b 2 busy playing all the awsum games that r comin out this year and i think the main word ther is "supposed"

nvidia have confirmed the launch of a card, and that the 9800gtx will have triple the power of 8800gtx, but whether its the 9800gtx being launched at it will have triple the power is another thing!

They say this sort of thing ever release. blah blah blah blah
It means nothing, by then everything would of changed, it may be 3X better on current games, but it will only just about manage the game in the future.
And it may have all that power, but without a CPU beastly enough to push all that information to the card, whats the point.
Heat is always a factor, and money, and the fact that no one cares until the mainstream stuff comes out and current stuff goes down in price
teknokid
13-06-2007, 06:14 AM
yep, you'd need atleast a quad and a game that can use quad to use the card to its full.
if its 3x as powerful it means it should get 60fps with crysis maxed- not a lot tbh.

Intel could do very well here. You'll probably start to see nvidia working really hard soon. They won't want this to be easy for Intel and with their much larger manufacturing power they are a real threat.
the new ati card does exactly what it says on the tin (aka beats the 640mb 8800gts but gets beaten by the gtx for less than the price of the gts) and ati's chip can be used for a lot more (stream processing number crunching etc.) and i dont think AMD r going for direct competetition with intel anymore because they know they cant win that way and so are branching off and using ati for fusion which will present a different option for upgradeability and cheap computers
Where did you see this? Every review i've seen the 2900 can barely keep up with the 320mb GTS which is £60/70 cheaper
As some of you may have heard Intel are entering the discrete graphics market in 2008
OK
what does anyone make of this?
erm, Intel and discreet graphics?

Yep they announced it a few days back.

They said that last year (http://www.neoseeker.com/news/story/6045/).

It got beat in every one of them bar extremetech.com :?
The price has dropped a bit now so it's more attractive. I'd still take the 640GTS though. Same price and much better at normal resolutions.
extremetech.com is the only site i've seen it win anything on. That is at very high resolutions though.
ATI seem to have worked out crossfire wlel though.
If i had a monitor that could do 2560x1600 and care enough for gaming I'd probably buy a pair.

face it ati fanboy, nvidia won this round :)
JDowdall
13-06-2007, 07:32 PM
yes i kno they have ya nvidia fanboy but i think it will be more interesting lower down because either company have got their act together with the lower down versions, for example the nvidia 8600 is a flop that only bhas dx 10 going for you and the ati competitor cards aren't launched yet
teknokid
13-06-2007, 07:56 PM
ati will no doubt beat the 8600, but remember the 8800gts 320 is pretty cheap, and will own all :)
JDowdall
13-06-2007, 08:23 PM
lol yh its at the boundary between upper mid range and enthusiast but i want to see how the market balances out in about 2 months with the new games and stuff that come out and prices balance out and drivers mature

13-06-2007, 09:17 PM
yep, everyone does :)

I really think we should wait till a couple of dx10 games come out and see then how poor old ati card does then, i have a feeling it still has some suprises left in it yet!

Well if that's your argument, why not wait till those games come out to buy a card :) You'll save money and get a better card.

yeah! oh wait, thats what i did :S
