Hi, I've just upgraded to a set of Arctic Cooling 8cm fans, all of which can power one another. Unfortunately the root fan needs a 4-pin PWM socket, while my motherboard only has 2x 3 pin (one feeding the heatsink fan). Please can somobody tell me if there is an adaptor on the market? I've hunted on ebay with no joy. Thanks.

There will not be an adaptor. The extra wire is for new BIOS fan speed control functions. Therefore the corresponding bit to make this function work needs to be on both ends. Technology in the fan and also in your mainboard. So you cannot adaptor this in anyway.
However that said you are normally able to connect the 4pin connector to a 3pin fan header and normally fans that have 4 wire connector have raised bits on the back edge of the connector in order to guide its fit on to a 3pin header. This would allow the fan to power up and send rpm tach info to the board.
