mrgoose, I've just mounted the truecrypt partition on the usb thingy.[added: either way] /dev/sdg2 does not show up in My Computer. Drifting way OT but truecrypt was the reason for the new installation on the laptop. It is new to me and I wanted to test it between Win and Linux.
It needed Vista SP1 to make a system partition and I could not get it to install. After maybe 4-5hrs (took about 1/2 hr to reach point of failure) of MS KB and other suggestions none of which worked, I gave up and tried to reinstall Vista.
Formatted the Win partition with the Vista disk but got a message something (I didn't note it down) along the lines of "no suitable volume meeting criteria found". Wound up deleting Suse and formatting one big partition (later resized, etc.) before I could get the installation program to work.
OK. Can't comment about Windows because I don't use it. However I can tell you that Truecrypt volumes in Linux are usually mounted at /media/truecryptn, where n is a number between 1 & 64.
Is it there?
Best wishes, G.

Yes, it mounts as you say,in this case /media/truecrypt1. I was just commenting that it doesn't show up in "My Computer" (where currently,it would be /dev/sdg2).
I've not played with it since reinstalling on the laptop but at a very quick glance it looks quite good. Will post here if I find any problems with it.
Atm, I suppose it's a bit of a silly one. I bought a 16GB USB flash drive with some of an Amazon token I got for Xmas. Then I start thinking what do do with it - Linux, maybe Knoppix and a fat32 partition that would work on both Win and Linux seems favourite. Then I start thinking encryption in case I lost it (not that it's ever likely to contain anything really sensitive) may be interesting....
Not sure if its just me or if others wind up doing things like that...

Ah well, that's quite interesting. The bog-standard, ugly Nautilus "Computer" view does actually show all mounted drives in the tree, regardless of how they are mounted.
WRT encryption, I tend to do entire volumes for my big disks (1 TB & 2 TB). These are Truecrypt ext3 volumes that can only be used on Linux.
However on my USB sticks, I tend not to Truecrypt the whole drive. It is left formatted in FAT 32 so I can use it as a transit medium for files from Windows boxes. In this instance, I create an encrypted volume as a file. The volume contained within that file is EXT3, but the file itself is part of the USB stick's FAT 32 file system.
Does that make sense?
Best wishes, G.

Yes. And it's also one of the things I've noticed, ie. there is more than one way to try...
