Anyone fancy a try at helping? Didn't make any changes but the laptop just lost sound. The icon in the task bar says "no audio output device is installed. In device manager it shows the VIA compatible High Defenition Audio and the device is "working fine" according to windows. Drivers show as been present and most recent. Running Vista ultimate SP2. Tried a system restore, to several restore points, but there now seems to be a problem with sys. restore - which I've fixed by manually creating a new restore point but is therefore no use to try to recover the sound. Any hints appreciated!

Fixed it myself, but I'll post the methos for other users. Open Device Manager. Select "Sound, game and video". Open this and right click on the "VIA HD Compatible" speakers. Click update driver software. Click to browse your computer, then select "let me pick from a list". Select the FIRST "Via compatible" option. Install the driver (ignore the warning). Then restart your machine. Job done - simple ;)
