it s the only way i can describe it . Sort of like what one gets when the terrestrial channels are not tuned in except the colour is blue/ pink instead of white and black. When i load a disc instead of a picture the noise comes up, and the only way I can remove it is by ejecting disc switching off and then switching on again. ?The DVDP is an OPPO 981 which I bought from CRT projectors who called it a handshaking problem allied to the fact the tv has 60 hz refresh rate instead of 50hz/. All this is meaningless to me so I wondered if anyone else gets this or can offer some advice? Thanks
Perhaps I should add that I have the player connected via HDMI/DVI and the output set at 720p 50hz. Previously my V+ box was connected there and although the TV at first wouldnt recognise it , eventually it did.Now I have it connected via component

I am going to have to say i am not sure on this one.
But to help narrow things down.
There was an update required to resolve issues with SKYHD via DVI input. This was to resolve the HDCP hand shake between the TV and the Sky Box.
Is your TV pre the fix ( Ie not had the fix done ) Or POST the Fix ( Has been fixed to support SKYHD)

THE TV was bought last July but had some new firmware fitted in december,so its post the fix I guess .I dont use a Sky HD box but a Virgin V+ cable box instead which i connected to the DVI input when I first got it and now is working via component.Apart from the first week I had no problems with it.
thanks

Ok
I Have Q321 but i do not currently have anything connected to DVI at the moment. I am going to be connecting an AV receiver to it soon. So see what problems i have. =)
Not really sure what to suggest. If the V+ box works to the DVI port then technically there should be nothing wrong with the port itself. Have you got another cable you can try??
Firmware update for upscaler???? Maybe this is an issue they addressed??
I know OPPO release firmware but don't know what version you have on yours
If its the 981HD you have this shows support for the following:
(NTSC 480p/720p/1080i/1080p, PAL 576p/720p/1080i/1080p)
This would suggest it can output 50 and 60hz signals to account for NTSC and PAL. So Q321 should have no problem here

With regards to the fix you had done.
Who did the fix was it us or repairtech.
Was the fix specfically for Sky HD. As sky HD required a chip replacement for Fix.
However there was also a Firmware update to resolve some lip sync issues with DVB-T tuner and also fix subtitle issue.
So could still be problem if you did not have Chip changed.

I was assured by CRT projectors that the Oppo firmware update is the very latest which was supposed to address any handshaking issues.
As to the fix I was never told what is was for or what they had done but I assume it was the SKY HD one and it was done by Repairtech and I think the firmware was updated too.At the time I was using SKY PLUS at the time and experienced various audio video( ghosting and sound distortion) problems which I eventually put down to the box. The V+ has been much better.
Its difficult to describe what I get - like lots of tiny moving blue/pink and white flakes. Fortunately I can get a picture by going through the procedure I mentioned but it is annoying
forgot to mention I have only the one HDMI/DVI adaptor lead which I bought from Novatech
I am wondering whether its a poor connection? I know the DVI end is incredibly fiddly and why Hyundai put the socket where it is , is beyond me. Iwill check though

Interesting but I tried two NTSC discs i have and there was no problem at all. It seems that one or the other struggles with Pal.I have the player set at TV type - auto and video mode is 2 as recommended by CRT

Ok in the latest firmware they talk about adjusting Video 2 and TV type to increase support for PAL/NTSC
Please see the following extracted from Release notes
Video 2 Mode No Longer Selects "Auto" as TV Type
The official firmware release linked the "Video 2" mode with "Auto" TV Type setting. "Video 2" is designed primarily for PAL disc playback, and when the "Video 2" mode is selected as the "Video Mode" in the setup menu, the player automatically defaults TV Type to "Auto" and will output PAL signal for PAL discs. For NTSC TV users viewing PAL discs, they need to go to the setup menu and change "TV Type" to NTSC. The new version no longer links the "Video 2" mode setting with "TV Type". This ensures maximum compatibility with NTSC TVs. We still recommend that users with multi-system compatible TV or projectors set "TV Type" to "Auto" to avoid extra PAL/NTSC conversion.
The bit that interests me is where is says that if watching PAL disc on NTSC TV user will need to Set TV type to NTSC to playback PAL Disc correctly.
Can you change your TV type on your OPPO to NTSC and see if it then plays back PAL disc correctly?? It will be intersting to see if this works
This firmware seems to suggest it breaks the link between video mode and TV type to stop it being changed to Auto.
Does this sound right?? Not having this unit ourselves we cannot say for sure

Q: How do I check the firmware version of my OPPO DVD player?
A: To check the firmware version, please eject the disc tray. While the TV display is showing the OPPO logo screen and the "OPEN" message, press the "OSD" button on the remote control. The current firmware version will be displayed.

Can you confirm the exact model number of your machine as that version firmware does not seem to tie up with anything on oppo site for 981
What does model say on unit

Is this TV not NTSC and Pal?
TBH i am quite confused now. I thought the purpose of the auto buttton is to allow the player to automatically set itself according to which type was played ie Pal or NTSC without having to alter anything
What i will say is that larmingl;y whilst I had in onetyepe 2 the picture colours changed dramatically - blacks became purple, yellow became green and there was lot of dark pink around. Only when I switched off and on was normality restored.
type 1 behaves ,more normally and i can play both Pal and NTSC here although Pal disc still give me the problem i mentioned before
I will now try your suggestion

I can now happily report that the your suggestion has worked and the player and tv work fine although the refresh rate is now 60 hz . Would that make any difference?
Cant understand why auto/pal sections works as recommended by cRT??

sorry do you mean serial number? The model number is DV-981HD surely
Sorry I should have stressed CRT supplied a separate Q@A leaflet and one of the Qs is "which firmware have you fitted?" A - "we are loading a special PAL firmware - 0209"

OK so its working now at 60hz correct??
It should not make a great difference running at 60hz apart from slight variations in line count for resolution between the two standards. The NTSC Standard for video is 60hz. Pal is 50hz
Some people argue one is better than the other but this is something thats argued both ways on many av forums.
It would appear that the Q321 is happier with the NTSC 60hz rather than the PAL 50hz feed from your OPPO unit. So as long as it works thats all that counts really cause whats important is that your unit is working and you can enjoy its use =)
OK fair enough if they have special firmware release that explains why it does not show on oppo site

Many thanks for your help . i am somewhat confused as to why a set sold in the UK market should be happier with software intended for the US.The same software worked perfectly ok in my multiregion dvd recorder connected to the same set via component leads. I get the feeling that if I had selected a more conventional player, like a Denon 1930 ,I wouldnt have had this problem. The 981 has been shoehorned into a market it wasnt originally intended for,
Once again thanks as you were much more helpful than CRT, who have repeatedly failed to answer my emails

Well i believe Q321 can work with PAL or NTSC. Well certainly it can by component connection. When i got home i tried my nintendo Wii which can be changed between PAL 50HZ and NTSC 60hz and my Q321 worked fine with either setting so certainly Q321 on component works with 50 and 60hz. Not sure about DVI but you would think so if other bits of the TV does.
But i am glad we got something working there for you as we kind of muddled our way through =)
Best Regards
