Entertainer XP 1900 60GB So /1856007 / Order date 05/03/02 extra ram added at purchase 32*64 256mb 184 PIN 2.5V 2.1GB/s
This computer is used mainly for surfing the net and handling Outlook 2003 - Its recently been reformatted + new hard disk added by Novatech .
Its still slow (Outlook file is large) what options are avaible to speed up processing

what is the spec on it now then
to speed things up;
Add more RAM
Overclock your processor
put harddrives into RAID 1
Do the hard drives run at 7200 or more? if not then get faster hard drives

The invoice quoted should show how much ram was fitted when you built it

If I went down the CPU upgrade - is this plug in and play ?

depends on your motherboard
each RAM slot can be equiped with 1024mb RAM (1gig)
CPu's are plug and play
google and download CPU-Z and then post everything that it says here and i will get back to you with suggestions

few things,
overclocking is a stupid and dangerous practice to get more performance out of your PC by running the processor pass its limits, even with sufficient cooling it can make your PC unstable and chances are the CPU will die a few months down the line.
its a common thing is that a PC is running slow due to software problems and you can upgrade bits of the hardware which often wont actually solve the problem.
You are running Outlook with a big mail box, this can make any PC run slow regardless of how new it is. I think if you split this into folders this will probably make things quicker, Im trying to get to grips with Outlook 2003 problems at my work. You can try putting on the Office 2003 service pack 2 if you havent already done so, prob best to put a message on a forum where some people who more savvy with Outlook and Office 2003 might be able to help

both AMD and Intel underclock their cpu's
so the cpu runs ultra safe
overclocking is stable with sufficient cooling (take my cpu for instance, been over clocked 300mhz(may not be alot), i get 10% more frames on css and 5% more on bf2, it runs xp like a dream, stays cool, and still has standard HSF)(and no additional case fans)(1800>2170)
and having that slow RAM
even if it is 512mb, that can still mean system lags, even without gaming on it.
you can get RAM optimizers that help keep RAM free(really :shock: )

If it's just outlook then there's your problem. I can't believe such a machine is slow on the internet. It's not even breaking a sweat.

The computer is very slow to access internet sites - Im on a 2mb broadband connection - 10 to 15 secs for an ecommerce type site is the norm
With Outlook 2003 I have addins which filter / file regular attachments I have - This slows it down -
Getting back to basics - from the data i sent what ram have i got ? how much more ram can i add + the spec of the ramj i need to order

With a machine of that age you are not going to break any limits whatever you do.
Your graphics will be limited by the older technology (AGP2x or AGP4x). Your motherboard will have a low FSB.
The best you can realistically hope for is via a complete reinstall from scratch and ensuring that you have all the latest drivers.
If you can't stretch to a new PC then consider a barebones system.

no, not everyone overclocks their processor, it puts a heavy burden on it, and you may find other undesirable side effects like your USB ports stop working. Yes lots of people do overclock their systems, but it does shorten the life of the components of the machine.
For faster, better and more secure web browing, why not switch to the Firefox browser http://www.getfirefox.com. IE6 has been around for about 5 years with no real significant improvements, Firefox has tabs (switch quickly between multiple sites, changeable search engines, and is more immune to spyware.
