I have 2x512mb ddr2 ram i would like to upgrade to 2x1gb, but my ram is 533mhz, could i change that with 667 mhz?

depends what motherboard you have.

I believe RAM of the same type is backwards compatible. But best to check your Motherboard manual to be certain.

sorry im not to good with pc's, but what does "RAM of the same type is backwards compatible" mean?
and i cant find it im my manual, if it help i bought it from novatech.

You can buy 667Mhz DDR2, however if the chipset of the motherboard does not support 667Mhz memory then your RAM clock speed will downclock to speeds supported by the Mainboard Chipset.
So for Example.
If you have Foxconn 945GZ7MC which has Maximum memory speed support of 533mhz. If i put a stick of 512mb 667Mhz ram in to this board, the RAM will clock down and run at 533mhz as this board only supports up to this speed.
So you can buy 667 but depending on model board you may or may not get the full benefit of 667.

ahh cool, ill just buy 2 stick of 1gb 533 , cheers
