Hey there,

As the topic says, I need a new CPU, mobo and ram and I've chosen the following. Does this seem like a good combo?

CPU:

AMD Quad Core X4 630 2.8GHz Socket AM3 - Retail (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/Processors/AMDAthlonX2AndX4/AMD/ADX630WFGIBOX.html)

Mobo:

Gigabyte GA-M720-US3 nForce 720D (Socket AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/Motherboards/AMDAM2AllChipsetMotherboards/Gigabyte/GA-M720-US3.html)

RAM:

G.Skill PK Series 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/Memory-PCAndLaptop/DDR2-PC2-8500/1066MHz/G.Skill/F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK.html)

I'm going to be slapping a 5750 on to that, does anyone think/know I'll encounter any problems?

I'm also not sure about the difference between AM2, AM2+ and AM3 motherboards, what's the difference and more importantly, what supports Athlon X4?

Thanks in advance

Looks good, nice quality Mobo and RAM.

AM2+ means it suports AM3 CPU's as well as AM2's. AM3 supports DDR3 Memory,

I would get a 5770 instead of a 5750 though.

And what PSU will you be running?

I had probs with my previous build so made a return and getting the new components. I've already got the 5750 and an OCZ 600w PSU so I can't make any changes to that. It ran the other stuff fine so looking for something similar.

Sorry about this but what's an AM3 processor? I took another look at some more mobos and found that this one (Asus M4A77D AMD 770 (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/Motherboards/AMDAM3AMDChipsetMotherboards/Asus/90-MIBB50-G0EAY0GZ.html)) is the only one I could find which specifically states it supports Athlon X4. It would also support the DDR2 memory although it's an AM3 board?

Confused

All the AM2+ Boards will suport that CPU, so your setup is fine.

got the stuff this morning and built just now.

everything is working ok however, the memory is only at 800 and everything i've researched so far says it should handle 1066.

anyone any ideas? i'm stumped. checked the bios and i can't change anything related

have you looked in the "MIT" overclocking bit of the bios? you would have to change the memory multiplier. but there is no real difference between 800 and 1066 performance wise anyway.

Why AM2+ over AM3? I'd go with something like the MSI 770-G45 personally.

just fancied a quick lol to be honest.

will check the bios again tonight. when i was looking at it i could see it showing as 800mhz but no option to modify. chances are i'm missing something but as long as it's working ok then it could be worse

800mhz is the default latest ddr2 ram is set to and to have it running at its rated 1066 you will need to OC the ram yourself in the bios.. check cpuID for the memory.
