I use the free version of AVG. I haven't had a virus attack in ages (me and my big mouth!!!), so in my opinion it's great.

I do have AVG on my laptop. Not sure why. I think it was because it was playing up. It only ever picks up virus I know about or programs i've written that use things that can be detected as virus (false positives).

If you know what you are doing anti virus is a waste of time imo.

I'd recommend AVG though, just turn off that daily scan. Whats the point of that.....If it's running all the time in real time surely it would detect it then..Why bother scanning the hard drive every day.

Wise words. I didn't run av for years, never had a problem. Just kept an eye on running processes etc. But now I've started reading "sensitive documents" I can't afford to run the risk.
Still, I don't think I've ever actually got a virus, but you know, better safe than sorry what what.

i've had onecare for a while now and i havent had any problems with it and it automatically defrags my comp deletes un needed stuff and auto back ups 4 me just cos im 2 lazy 2 do it normally

i use Norton 360, it's not found 1 virus yet in over 2 weeks.. i don't know if that is Vista's higher security or just Norton not finding anything.. but the tune-up works good and you get about 130 files scanned p/s, pretty quick and i have the same CPU as you so it should run at a similar speed, depends on your HD aswell though, don't know what HD i have..

In an effort to diagnose the problem with my Steam, I installed BitDefender yesterday after reading some reports. Seems alright so far, but as usual my complaint with all AV's still arises in that they slow your machine down so goddamn much!

Personally I've used F-Secure for a few years now and been more than happy with it. I wouldn't use Norton if you gave it to me for free, in fact going back a few years now I was actually entitled to use Norton for free due to the licensing terms my employer had for it. I went out and purchased two copies of McAfee rather than use it. It's a bit like Windows really, a big enough name that nobody will question you choosing it, but plenty unreliable enough to generate a good deal of support revenue for the companies that get paid to fix things ;) I like a reliable easy to use system, so I use Linux except where I have to keep my Windows skill up to date :lol:

Yeah, even reviews I've seen of the older AVG 7.5 (Oct 2006, Feb 2007) talk about 100% support for 64bit XP and Vista.

lol i was on that matt! it was alrite, nowt special really, it made you do a disc defrag every week, which was... uneeded to say the least, it also made you back up regularly! Not that its a problem really but i havent got much in the way of backup medium so i was constantly rooting around for discs or my memory stick or wateva every sunday lol but the thing is, i have no need of backing up regularly! i have my work for GCSE which i have saved and isnt going to be touched and the rest of it i can just download or i have discs lol

Things change frequently in the AV world.

Up until recently, people shunned Norton like the plague due to its huge footprint and resource hogging. Things changed with the last major revision and even the most picky of reviewers are starting to recommend it again. Grudgingly.

AVG is the opposite - it used to be the best free AV on the market: Reliable, small, efficient...

It grew. It started to get notorious for false-positives. People left in droves.

Avira, Avast - both good. I use NOD32 - not free but very good.

My mail server runs Clamav. My web server has Early Bird on it, but that hasn't been triggered for years.
My other boxen don't bother.

I've been using grisoft's avg for many years. Never had a virus, and me kids machine never had a virus either, which says a lot. None-the-less, when they load stuff like bingo playing software, you may as well have a virus. If they ever complain about slowness I reformat the hard drive and re-install, quicker than messing about, This has had the unexpected blessing of all my kids knowing how to back up their files, cos I don't.

Actually, the latest iteration is very good! I vowed never to touch it again, but I think I might this next time. Been running it as a trial on my 800Mhz PIII laptop, and it is running like a charm!

Apart from that, NOD32 is head and shoulders above the rest, Kaspersky is also very good.

Currently using Outpost Security suite as I have been beta testing it for ages and was given a free lifetime license. Works well enough.

The best virus-prevention system on your computer, is YOURSELF! Be sensible, follow all of the common-sense rules, and you may probably never need antivirus- good to have a safety net though!

Well it may be, I've lost count the number of NAV machines I've cleared, where norton was the culprit, either crashing the them or making them run so slow they were useless. Plus people were actual paying for the privilege. MAkes no sense to me to pay for a second class product when there is a perfectly good one for free. I must agree though, you are your own best defence, whatever your solution. PS I would never recommend macafee either.

Bought kaspersky off novatech, was cheaper when I got it. Stuck it on the pc's in our house. Nothing bad has happened yet, originally ran AVG till version 8 where it became annoying,bloated and kept insiting that it be upgraded to the full edition.

Avast! Don`t have any nasties on my M/C and I visit some pretty funky haunts, so it works (there`s a plus!) :D It`s better than AVG with respect to it not being as bloated and the update procedure is seamless and a lot more often too.

Anything is better than nothing though except for Norton. If it came packaged with a free gold pig I still wouldn`t. Google it, see for yourself ;)

Thing I like about kaspersky IS is that it gives you what you have downloaded or sent outbound on the NIC ports. Quite interesting / alarming.
