I'm surprised none of the Windows guys have responded to this. I'm a little out of my depth here because I dumped Microsoft products nearly three years ago (http://www.garfnet.org.uk/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=66&Itemid=16), largely because of the plethora of issues around Vista. But I'll have a bash anyway...
The error is described as "a general hardware error". This could mean almost anything. Sometimes it can be indicative of a boot disk failure. But it seems there is also an inherent issue with Vista too. This thread on MS's so-called "Social Technet" might shed some light on the matter for you, especially the last post:-

As a matter of interest, can you boot OK from a LiveCD? best wishes. G.
Edit:- the "letter D" issue is almost certainly unrelated and is probably due to a knackered keyboard!

With respect, ramzy2, a better thread title would have helped attract people who might help. :xsmile:
This does sound like a hardware error if the backup disk isn't working. As mrgoose says, a linux Ubuntu LiveCD is a good tester in most cases.

Setting bios defaults and setting CD/DVD to boot before Hard Drive in BIOS boot options is a help too.

Possibly a problem with display drivers? You tried updating them?

From my experience not an uncommon problem with laptops. Could be a damaged key/keyboard, or there could just be some food or other dirt stuck under there.
