Nice case. Had a couple in the past for family.

He already has a case. But i dont really like that case, the front is very bad quilty plastic. and the inside bends like a sausage. but i guess its fine for a cheapo build.

For a cheap build it is great and when filled with components it is solid! Front may be plastic but it looks very nice in real life!

I dont think he wants to overclock and i dont think he needs a case or a after market cooler. and no PSU? and i dont think he will need 500Gb of space either. or a BLUE LED fan.

Hi

Thanks for your replies,

I need a PSU, but I dont need a case or optical drive, 320gb hdd should be fine.

Do you need to purchase an OS? or have you got that covered?

Because if you overclock a PC on such a low end mobo that is just made for basic things, you can run into problems. And you dont want hardware breaking and crashing when you can just have it stable and cool. afterall, he is just using it for basic things. so you would not even see the difference in overclocking it.

And you may as well save some cash on the HDD as he will probly not even fill the 320gb, so why waste cash?

Because it then becomes a good investment that will last longer.

the difference in price between 320gb and a 500gb hard drive is not worth it, especially if he's going to have it for the next 10 years :)

Internet & emails? Why would you purchase an OS for that?

So Unix? Or Haiku? What are you getting at? They would probably both be harder to learn for him.

You shouldn't let your own prejudices get in the way of impartial money-saving advice, my friend. Ubuntu will be perfect here:

I don't find the Linux version of Firefox that different. :xsmile:

Oh and FWIW, the Gigabyte G31 boards overclock very well, just run into some issues with memory speed if you push them too far.

Its not the fact i dont know how to use it or anything, its just i dont like the compatibility sides of it. and since i have my MSDN i have never needed to save cash on using Linux.

You only run into compatability issues with bleeding-edge new hardware. G31 is not. For most folks, Ubuntu will install like a dream. Worth a try, I'd say.

You know, you could probably fit a AM3 rig in there if you shopped around. Having a quick froogle:

Athlon II X2 240 - £35
GA-MA78LMT-US2H - £50
Corsair 2GB DDR3 - £40
Coolermaster TX3 - £15
Some HDD - £35
Antec Earthwatts Green 380W - £35

Which is £210. You could get some new peripherals or even case and optical drive with the money left over...

Ah, well, Intel onboard graphics used to be a nightmare with Ubuntu. I reckon things have improved, but I always preferred NVidia graphics with linux.

ATI are better too these days. :xsmile:

Well you know, just an alternative as i feel uneasy recommending redundant tech ;)
