Hi ppl,

I have been running 2 x Maxtor 320gb SATAII DiamondMax 21 drives in my Intel Core 2 Duo system for a good few months now and initially had hdd temps of around 28-32oC idle-load when I installed a meaty 12cm fan to the front of my case. I have just bought another 320gb drive and unfortunately I had to install that on top of my first boot drive. They were spaced 1 bay apart before so now theres 2 drives together and a gap of 1 bay for the other drive. My temps now read Drive 1:37oC, Drive 2:35oC, Drive 3:38oC (just added). Ive noticed that under load the new drive goes to about 40oC and the other 2 end up with an additional 1-3oC increase as a result. Is this anything to worry about or do these temps sound acceptable?

Sure I could pull my case apart and put the other drive into an unused floppy compartment spacing them out again but ive got all my cables nice and neat and its a bit tight to get the drives in and out with a ATX case! I had to remove my ram, gfx card, and PSU power connector from the mainboard in order to get the drive in!

If this sounds dodgy I guess I will have no choice but to pull my machine apart and move it? I have best part of my cables out of the way or hidden at the back of the case to show off my nice neons :P

What do you think of those temps?

Hi,

Your temps sound ok. The Hard drives in the desktops here at work are smack bang under the PSU and get extremely hot. Have you tried a program called Speedfan? You can use this to run an online fitness test, which will compare your HDD to others of the same make and model. :)

Cheers for that Ben!

I've had SpeedFan running for a while as I use a 20x4 LCD display mod at the front of my case which gives me all my temps. I didnt see the online analysis button there. Have just done it, although from cold boot as the HDD temps are now 34,32,34. It basically said the average temp was 37oC and 48oC was the max average so I guess mine are cool. I will try it again later on when the temps increase to 38,35,38 and see what happens there, although i'm sure it's partly to do with the temperature difference as we are supposed to be in summer. I'm sure when the weather cools down a bit, so will my temps. I remember my CPU temp being a good 5 degrees cooler when it was colder. Hopefully the Hdd's will be the same.

Cheers for your help,

JB.

You should be okay. When they start hitting the 50's you could run into trouble.
One of mine starting playing up at about that, so i just ended up buying individual fans for all my hdd's. It's been running fine for well over a year now. They all run in the 20's.
