I've always seen people talk about it and mention it but what exactly is it?

a distributed computing project. Basicaly, proteins in your body 'fold' and what Folding@Home does is simulates EVERY possible way a protein can fold. If a protein folds wrong it can cause deseases such as Alzheimer's, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers. We run F@H on our computers because there is so many possibilities that it would just be impossible for Stanford University to complete the project with the many servers/PCs they may have. Best of all when we run it on our computers it only uses System Resources that are NOT being used on the PC, it will only use the idle processes of the CPU/GPU or whatever you may be folding on, However all this extra activity on the CPU/GPU may cause your electricity bill to rise a little.

EDIT: Oh i forgot to mention that running F@H will also contribute towards find a cure for these diseases.

Whats a WU?

How do i do one

WU = Work Unit. Its the peice of work that your PC is working on, if your running a CPU client it may take a few hours, it may take a few days, depends on your CPU and how your PC is being used. GPU will again take a couple of ours, and at most a day.

You can use the viewer to see how your WU is doing by right clicking the F@H icon in your system tray and selecting Display, how ever this will slow down your rate of folding as your systems resources are being used to give you that display which is very demanding on your GPU. You can use FahMon (http://fahmon.net/) to monitor your clients without hindering performance. Download and Install, run the program, then hit

Clients > Add new Client

Name the client... CPU1, GPU 1 or whatever you want. Then use to browse button to locate the install directory of the client... so C:/Programs/Folding@Home/CPU Client. Give it 30 mins or so and it will give a projectory of how long the WU will take, how far done it is so far and so on.

Not sure if anyonelse here folds on Mac. Try some googling or a post in the Stanford Forum (http://foldingforum.org/)

EDIT: Apologies for it being a harsh, i didnt mean for it to be taken that way. What i meant was that no one else here folds on a Mac.

Bit Harsh ?
No Need !
It was stated earlier on.

LOL at the pic though, not seen it in a while.

Edit: I'm sure anybody who regularly reads this Forum would know you meant no offence, but if not, that truly was an epic put down.
