Dvd ripping and re-encoding software

Hey im due to go on holiday soon and i've just got a new pda (O2 xda IIi) im trying to rip some dvds i have and put them onto my pda i havent a clue what im doing but generally i have downloaded a program 4 my pda that lets my pda view mpeg1 video and it can already view wmv so basically i need a program to allow me to rip my DVDs onto my computer then into the mpeg1 or wmv then downsize them to my pda can anyone help with software 4 this etc...

p.s and please tell me if this is illegal but as they are my movies that i have bought i suppose so?

It's not illegal to backup what you have purchased, add me to msn or email me as i have loads of video editing software in a bundle i can send it too you. Or put video editing into a torrent site as that is where i acquired my little bundle

squid what did you use?
coz i got loads of divx movies and i am wanting to convert them into proper dvds so if i wanted to watch the movie not downstairs then im not mucked by brining my 360 down

To convert to dvd u need to use nero 7+

Vso much better than nero imo oops I am talking b*****s dvd shrink is pretty good so is Dvd fab

guy here at work uses dvd fab and nero for converting his (non copyrighted I hasten to add) dvd's to different formats. Not actually seen what they look like though but he seems happy enough.

Winavi for me everytime imo mush faster than nero
