thinking about buying a Canon CanoScan LiDE 600F flatbed scanner, noticed it does not have an adapter to scan slides, but can you just place the slides on the bed and do the same job?

I own an older canon scanner which does have a slide scanner. The way it works is that there is a bright light that shines from the lid side, through the slide and onto the scanner bed. Because slides work by shining a powerful light through, there is very little definition between the colours on the slide itself. I can't see it would work just scanning a slide on the bed itself without this light coming through. I think the scanner would just see what you see when the slide is laying on a table.

I just happen to have a May Computer Shopper review of scanners here. The Canon LiDE 600F is highly rated but does not scan slides, only negatives. It powers off USB.

The Epson Perfection V200 Photo gets the nod for speed and quality under £100 and does slides and negatives. The HP Scanjet G2710 does the job, but is dog slow. They come with frames to hold 35mm transparencies.

Hope it helps.
