So yeah, since this is such a dead forum i thought it would be a good idea (and a cheap way of getting my 1000th post :) ) to have a place to discuss Google's Android platform. I feel that we're on the verge of a big push, with plans to release phones, tablets and netbooks at every price range that are not only superior to the competition but will be better priced too.
To start off, HTC Desire was launched today on T-Mobile. Some great prices...

My wife has an HTC Hero, it keeps connecting to the interweb and downloading something but I can't trace what it is trying to do. Orange have had to replace the handset saying it was an Andriod bug.

It clearly is the superiour phone OS, more and more manafactures are wanting to use the OS.
The growth off apps has hit 30,000 which is not anywhere near apples, but the rate of growth is doubble what Apples is...
Many of the iphones top apps, Shazam, Evernot etc.. are on the Android now. The OS is built better allowing Widgets, apps updating themselfs on there own.For example i have twitter, facebook, weather,BBC News all updating on there own, without me having to open an app to see it.
Just for me is the best Mobile OS out!

I am due a phone upgrade next month (april) so am eyeing up the HTC Desire on vodafone...keeping an eye out for people's experiences and comments - seen very good reviews so far!!
Just got a HTC Desire today, what apps should I get, bearing in mind I dont want to clutter it with stuff for the sake of it and dont intend using Facebook, Twitter etc.

Check out my appbrain link and view popular apps on that site too :)
Here's my Desire:
(reposted on another forum but hey ho...)
Have updated mine.

I've set my yr.no clock/weather widget on the main screen to load different apps (kaloer Clock, HTC Weather and Yr.no Detailed Weather Forecast) when clicking the left, right and weather sections of the widget.
Notice that the HTC Weather app never shows my "current location" forecast when I'm in my hometown....seems a lot of people have this issue although manually searching the town and adding it as a preset works fine. Kind of defeats the objective of the "current location" though..... Best to just use the yr.no widget as it's way better and more detailed at forecasting as you can see :)

Have the google nexus one my self and am loving android more than anything.
So many things to do with it that your not restricted with. For example, if needed, I can use my nexus's ones track ball as my PC mouse and the touchscreen as a keyboard! Wireless win!
Can also use it to become a wireless hotspot with its 3g connection. Heck I can even load up a Snes emulator, connect 2 nintendo Wii controllers wirelessly to it and play some 2 player games old school!
Anyone else here with the Nexus one?

It is average at best - the resolution is on a par with the sort of cameras you get on far cheaper handsets...

Considering the lighting conditions on that day, that picture is pretty awesome. And if I want to take a proper picture I'll use my EOS450D and not my phone :p

ah, the eternal iPhone vs pretenders debate goes on and on...definitely a marmite issue...
As I work for a firm of consultant engineers, we are often out and about on building sites and the like and sometimes at short notice etc. There is a need, at times, to take photos of something and you don't have a camera with you/to hand so the old camera phone comes in very handy. Obviously for decent piccies, a proper camera would be used, but for those times when a camera phone is just necessary, the chap in our office who uses his iphone always gets mocked for the quality of his pictures compared to those almost all of us can take on whichever phones we have...and that is the wordy explanation for my comment...

Woo a nexus user! Converted my Nokia friend to day to ditch the Symbian and get the Android and he is getting a nexus delivered tomorrow.
Full flash on a phone is awesome stuff I agree! As for the iPhone picture its not that bad a picture coming from a phone that can use its 3g to turn into a wireless hotspot, whilst watching stuff off Hulu and be in a phone call with 2 other people at the same time.
O wait... that isnt an iphone! Thats a Nexus one!

You'd have thought that it would be better, but having owned a Desire 2 weeks prior, the optical track ball is too small... an entire swipe with your thumb moves things across one space... Really isn't as awesome as it sounds. And how did your trackball break?!
Iphone 4? Please, android till I die!

I myself also have the Desire Z, I absolutely love it. Best phone I have ever purchased. Battery life isn't as abysmal as some would have you believe, either. I went for it due to the QWERTY keyboard, due to my hate for typing on a touchscreen (need the physical feedback from a keyboard to type quickly).

HTC Desire HD for me, Had the HTC Hero, which i sold for an iPhone, but regretted it after the 1st week. The Desire HD lets me do all the things my iPhone did, and then a whole lot more.

Apple is for the untech masses, Android will go beyond apple, my Xperia X10 just got Gingerbread and it's transformed it, lets not mention Andies are £25 pm and Apples are £40 pm, Apple is for those that don't question in life, the easy sell etc, the greatest marketing machine in history, oh, and did I forget to mention the £300 less I pay for a phone comes in handy, now should I use it for a 560GTX and new Corsair case or a Sandy and MB combo? tough call.

Still waiting for VM to release gingerbread for my Ace so I can leave the wifi on and not have the phone turn itself off, almost at the point of bypassing their systems now :(
