your opinion on this design + logo

After a disaster with my last webhost i have to re-do an entire site.

That is what a designer i found has done for me, personally i love it.

Opinions?

my opinion is that it's nice and i like it but it is very simples, I hope you didn't pay anything for it as it looks straight off an easy photoshop/gimp tut, and probably most peeps on this forum could've done that in less than 20 mins. (unless you specifically requested that he keep it simple of course)

Well i have no design skills what-so-ever and i did ask the guy to keep it very simple, overcomplicated designs = eww hehe.

It's obviously only a mock-up, but it's not unpleasant. Better to be simple rather than to cluttered.

I don't see any logos as such though...

It seems a lot of sites are getting affected by server outages where they assumed (or even paid for) automated backup. one I know of in the software industry (codinghorror.com) the owner is a total backup advocate stating if it's not backed up it doesn't exist etc, had a backup and restore regimen, which he tested, only to discover that the server he was backing up *to* was a VM on the same physical machine at his host.... DUHHHHHHHH
fortunately for him his site was popular enough that the internet itself had backed it up (google cache, enthusiastic visitors etc...)

A pleasant to look at simple approach was what i wanted and it fits the bill for me.

It's alight, as i gather you'll be competing with sites like Phoronix? Their layout is a bit more professional but yours is a bit more pleasing, so it comes down to content really.

Phoronix is more about general news/hardware for linux with a gaming section, mine will have an actual game directory on it as well as 99% of news for just gaming.

Also phoronix linux gaming news hasnt been updated since summer 09, i'm not slack ;)

Nevertheless, it's already a well established site. You're just starting out. Since you'll most likely be wanting to take some of their 'market share', so competing with them.
