is there any real performance difference between media centre and home, is there any difference in gaming or just in media loading etc

I shouldn't think so, it's basically XP with an extra bit of software running.

Not a lot really, there are better systems available that you can install onto XP without paying for a whole new OS. ;)

Media center also has a 60 day Evaluation :)

I personally thought Media centre just provided extra support and acceptance of 3rd party equipment in order to use your pc as a video recorder/hi-fi or whatever. As well as built in software for such things.

I've run both XP Pro and MCE on the same PC and there's no noticable difference in performance. It's just XP with some bolt on software to support TV Cards and streaming media.
Having said that I couldn't live without MCE now having used it for a while. It works so perfectly in combination with my Xbox360 for playing movies/music stored on my PC and also as a digital video recorder.
