Has anyone put Linux Mint 8 on the E16, and if so, were there any issues, eg wifi?

Perhaps to answer my own question, can I assume that since Mint 8 uses the 2.6.31 kernel, the previous wifi HOW TO threads equally apply here?

One would assume they will but.......

On a brand new E16, I installed Mint 8 and used the HOW TO's for the native rtl8192se driver, but it would not or could not see any networks.
The Mint forums suggest that this not uncommon, and I was switched on!

Being averse to hard work, I replaced Mint 8 with Ubuntu 9.04 (with a 2.6.28 kernel), and again used the HOW TO for the native driver.
Immediately saw all nearby networks.

My wife's E16 has Ubuntu 9.04 with the 2.6.31 kernel and the driver specified in the original HOWTO, and running NDIS. Also running OK.

Why then, if Mint is a derivative of Ubuntu, does Ubuntu wifi work when Mint doesn't?
Neither machine is dual booting.
Not a problem for me, but it might help others.

I'm afraid I have no experience of this at all. However, what I can tell you is that the 2.6.31 kernel, requires you to compile drivers for the wireless card. Whilst the kernel supports this particular card, it does not actually have the driver pre-compiled for it.

As an aside, the new Ubuntu (v10.04/Lucid Lynx) is out in a couple of weeks. This is a Long Term Support (LTS) edition and I think that in your case, that is the one to go for in the longer term. FWIW, I have already installed an alpha-test on several machines and it really does seem rather good - though I have not installed it on an X16 yet!

Best wishes, G.

Many thanks. Garf.
I've decided to go for 10.04 in a month or so's time (after the bugs are sorted!!!)
