View Full Version : Admins and Mods
Mr. Lime

Currently present as members on these forums
we have 7 Admins, 12 Moderators, 4 Novatech Customer Service people and 8 Novatech Technical Support people
The customer and technical support are im assuming responsible for after-sales help in their respective fields :)
And they are as active as they need to be :)
Miss Apple and Stacey are wonderfully helpful :) many a time i have seen them help out people with issues ranging from mis-orders to wrong orders to orders DOA
~Steve-o~, Null-Entity and Mike compose the active ranks of the tech helpers :)
All them helpful when they need to be, mike especially :)
the amount of threads he posts on walkthroughs and fixes is legendary :)
Next we come to the mods
Of the 12 we have Hobo, JDowdall, Jonny2Bad, Nox, scrivz69, Skywalker and last but not least snakedoc as active mods.
In terms of feet-on-ground moderating we see more of skywalker snakedoc and scrivz
Snake is the only one i have observed actively coming up with new material as apposed to just enforcing the rules
What with his threads of the year and his MvM ideas and his recent high horse section in which i find myself posting this :)
But none the less their contribution is seen every day in the slog they put into keeping us lot of forumites in line
Last we have the admins
Amy, codemonkey, Coops, Danno, KevinC, kpkpkp, Wilbo
Im sure you all have responsibilities that keep you all from posting terribly much
But to the ones who actively patrol these forums (im going by post count here)
Amy codemonkey Danno
What is being done to actively improve the forums from your end?
Many people can see that these forums are not what they used to be, a hardcore group of posters scraping away at their brains coming up with things to say
New members coming with problems and leaving after three or four posts
I ask only as a curious and active forum member as your contributions can obviously from the nature of your jobs here slip by un-noticed.
At no point do i mean to marginalize your roles here,
But having never been an admin or known one, i find myself somewhat unsure as to what you do :)
I am interested in others opinions as to this rather touchy subject
Thank you in advance for reading what has amounted to an essay lengthwise

codemonkey and kevinc are the brains of the forum, the main ones that look after the forum, make sure its working ok.
wilbo is head of IT at novatech, he doesnt use the forum that much.
kpkpkp is the commercial director, i am not to sure how much time he spends on the forum.
coops is the head of our RnD team, he used to spend a lot of time on the forum but doesn't get much free time to get on here anymore.
me i would say are more like moderators just with an admin title, i was only made admin a few days ago so dont really know what i can do now. ill have to have a play with my new powers.
i am not to sure what is being done to make the forum a better place, the only change i can think of that recently happened is the manual account approval system. every new user has to have their account manually activated by one of the mods, this has stopped a lot spammers using the site.
We are open to ideas too :D
Although the manual activation has meant a lot less 'interesting' threads appearing :D Don't have to be on our toes quite as much...

Sort of making sure everythings running smoothly
wilbo is head of IT at novatech, he doesnt use the forum that much.
kpkpkp is the purchasing director, i am not to sure how much time he spends on the forum.
coops is the head of our RnD team, he used to spend a lot of time on the forum but doesn't get much free time to get on here anymore.
Fair enough, as i said some have responsibilites that keep them elsewhere
me i would say are more like moderators just with an admin title, i was only made admin a few days ago so dont really know what i can do now. ill have to have a play with my new powers.
Hmmmm so why mods with an admin title?
seems odd

So one change? is all that comes to mind?
Out of curiosity whose idea was the manual approval of accounts?
And that still seems to be a moderator area
We are open to ideas too :D
Although the manual activation has meant a lot less 'interesting' threads appearing :D Don't have to be on our toes quite as much...
Nox
And yet in terms of new stuff and ideas so far i have only seen snakedoc coming up with them?

Seriously you on some kind of forum crusade? :)
But many people, moderators and admins included have said the forum is what the members make it
But if the admins and moderators arnt putting in as much effort as the members, we cant be held accountable 100% for the forums not being so active

Well, at least its more active and interesting than certain other forums I could mention. Greatest of respect to Amy, I don't feel she actually bought anything as such other than the odd competition. This, IMO does not make a forum. One which needs gimmicks to keep members interested is probably not worth it. I certainly don't feel this way, if I did I would hang up my modship.

Upon what are you basing this statement? As snakedoc says in terms of leading the forum she came up with many an awesome competition but not much else
all respect to her she did find some awesome prizes :)

well he was just stating that that was his opinion, also competitions encourage people to hang around more= a more active forum. long term members spend more time (monitoring the competition) and post more, new members more likely to stay and become active long term members

Hmmmm but then all you end up with is competition threads with lots of posts, and the rest of the forum in the same state as it was before

The reason i have stayed so long is because i find this forum quite fun(i need a life) because i have been on other forums before and ive only stayed there for about 1 month at the most. here i can have a bit of a laugh while still talking about important issues(well not talking more reading but its still all the same)

Erm, what lol?
The opening post reported that many people register, post a few then go. I have noticed that there is a slow turn around in posts but but i think that's kind of ok. The relaxed moderation appears ( as far as I can see) based on a few common sense rules which appear to respected.
snakedoc
08-04-2010, 02:15 PM
Agreed, we do try to be as forgiving as possible, some members do not make this easy though. Somethings cannot be tollerated but in general we are fairly relaxed.
i do like the relaxed atmosphere here. if i need help with my computer (which i guess this forum is mainly for) then i get it straight away, from a wide range of experts, which is great! and then i generally read through a few posts - nothing to do with the hardware to be honest, as i dont understand any of it :S so in that sense i drop in and out, giving my opinion when i want to! i like this new section of high horse, as there are a lot more serious topics worth babbling about than in general discussion, but from my view, things seem to be working well!

Mr lime I can see your point in the OP.
Both me and Snake doc are lucky that our employers don't know what we do all day apart from turn up for work.We can moderate the forum and keep an eye on you guy's and deal with stuff if needed.
I ain't sure what Sky walker, Hobo,J2B,J Dowdell,Nox and the other guy's are up to but I would think they are at work as well without the internet access we have.So all the stuff is usually sorted by the time they log on,Which is why you don't see alot of them.
The admins at nova are working and leaving us to it which is a good thing as they can concentrate on what they are good at which is giving us good deals etc.
We have discussions on how to improve the forum and make it a better place for everyone and Snake doc excels at it keeping you guy's amused.
If you have any idea's please feel free to offer them up.Some like change and some don't.
We do this in our own time for nothing and we know it is appreciated by both the admins and the forum members.
Sorry for the long read but sometimes even I don't feel appreciated for the hour's I put in.:(

that people seem to put in more effort to game threads than others
thing is that people dont want to spend their time on the fun and games section of the forum because they have invested in high end hardware so they can play the latest graphically intense blockbuster games...... not count to a million ;)
thh, I only come on this forum when im bored or when I want to have a talk about hardware, get a problem fixed or gather opinions on what to buy. I don't want to come on a computer forum to talk about things that are normally pointless or totally unrelated to anything i care about. this is probably why I only have the post count in the time i've been here in comparison to other member who have multiple the times the post count yet haven't been here as long.

Serious answer?
IMO (very important to make that clear) where do you think the forum ranks in relation to all the other balls Novatech has in air.... and in this kind of economy? Don't you think they are paying attention to the very important things?
The forums are a place for discussions, questions and answers and oh yes competitions. How much more advanced do you think it should be? What improvements are you expecting to be made or have seen on other forums that you currently reside on?

Mr Lime, I can see where you are coming from. It's rather nice that you have that level of commitmant to the forum and you want to see it grow and expand. I really do like the cut of your jib!
To be honest I quite like the idea of Topics of discussion staying on topic and not floating away to something totally unrelated i.e. what would someone look like in a dress.
I think and or believe that some people forget it's not a chatroom it's a forum and therefore it takes people time to answer or post due to real life (tm). Sometimes topics need to stay open and await an answer before it natruly moves on to something more evolved from the original posing question or statement. However that's the Mod duty. To gently try and urge people to stay on topic or know when it's ok for everyone to talk about balloons. It's a tough job and takes good judgement to gauge that mark.
I also find it increasingly frustrating for someone to ask me to quantify my opinion based on facts. However that's just me..
totally agree with g-man about this NOT being a chat room, and we shouldnt expect it to be - it doesnt have to be buzzin all the time. although i do wish he based what he said more on the facts of the matter...

There are some good points raised in the OP.
So here is my take on it.
I read the forums everyday and I try and help out where my help is needed but I have to watch over my team of product managers and make sure they have all that they require to do their jobs effectively.
Amy, Daryl (DJF), Liz, Jim, Ben and Wen have massive workloads so they spend their time working extremely hard which does not leave them much time to work on the forum – when they quite periods or something to tell you they get on here.
Wilbo as Danno pointed out is the head of IT - or to be absolutely correct is Novatech’s IT Director. Wilbo runs the team that Codemonkey and Kev work in. They are responsible for writing every system in the building from the ground up and the website – not to mention keeping all the hardware in tip top working order. If you saw the volume of work that Codemonkey produces you would think that his name was a collective name for a department - I honestly do not know how he does it and the same goes for Kev.
Coops is again massively busy but it still very active on the forum albeit from behind the scenes – he is a pool of knowledge that is called upon daily.
The forum is a very important part of our business and it has a dual role. It is 50% a support mechanism for our customers and as we endeavour to offer the highest levels of support wherever we can our support teams are, as the OP pointed out very vigilant. It is also 50% a community for like minded individuals to engage with one another. We try to keep things interesting but spend most of our time keeping things correct. We try to ensure good levels of respect amongst users, minimise moderation and maintain freedom of speech. I hope that is the one of the reasons all the forum members use this forum in its community element. Snakedoc and Scrivz so impartial it beggars belief, they are a credit to the forum and have taught me a lot about live and let live - "they bring great balance to the force". Talking of the force - Skywalker and the others are very active in making sure there are no spam bots or naughtiness whilst at the same time they contribute massively in helping out users and keeping things fresh.
I would like to hear more and more suggestions from the community about what they would like on here as it is their forum. What makes a forum great is not the platform or the directory structure but the users. We have a very diverse customer base as a business and therefore a very diverse user base on the forum. IMHO it is the diverse mix of people on here that makes the forum what it is, from the techy to the technophobe - from the serious to the silly, it is a great blend.
I think forums are like the tide of a sea and they ebb and flow - busy sometimes and not so busy at others. The people who come to the forum with a question, get the answer and leave are just as important as the users that are in the "regulars club". The new users asks a question that will no doubt be viewed by someone else and that initial answer from a regular may help the many and not just the OP. People want different things from the forum and I would like to think the majority get what they want out of it.
So there you have it - I think the mods and admins should be here to make the users time on here as pleasurable as possible, to assist when required and be ready to help where ever they can. If you want something changed then please ask - we will always do our best to help even though you may not always get what you want, I promise we will listen. At the same time and as someone has already said Novatech is a business. The Novatech team do have a job to do and would get into trouble if they spent all day on the forum. We do not pay anyone to be a full time forum member and we try to get the balance right of work tasks and forum activity.
I think this forum is great and in the same way Novatech has been built on years of good experiences the forum will grow in the same way but it takes time – we tried the turbo charged way of increasing the forum traffic and managed to somehow cheapen the offering and annoy some of our loyal customers. So now we are trying a little more hands off approach and with the way that social networking is changing so are peoples requirements from a forum. We are trying to let the forum develop in an organic way so that it is a product cultured by its users and I believe we are succeeding with the valuable input from each and every one of you give.

I see this topic has really drawn you guys out of the woodwork :)
Cant remember the last time i saw someone use the phrase "cut of your jib" :)
Hmmmm that is why i suggested a chat function on the forum, that way the forum could be an area for discussion and information
and all the chatty topics could be distilled into the chat function,
I thought perhaps a more clear definition between a "chatty" area and a "serious" area would be better for the forum and its coherency as such,
Because currently there is a sort of bleed over effect from the forums with everything sort of being both techy and chatty
And the distinctions between high horse and general discussion and the tech parts doesnt seem to be enough
Now i know im as big an offender, if not the biggest offender of them all, as others, so i cant really talk
But having been here for several months, and having heard system7 say it on more than one occasion, it feels like the forum is trying to be everything at once and not really managing anything really well,
There are some good points raised in the OP.

And im glad you decided to post your opinion on this rather, if handled in the wrong way, thorny topic
I agree whole heartedly with your description of the effort put in by the customer service team and the mods :)

It would be nice to see occasionally one of them post about something they are up to :)

really agree with your comment there kp, it is really good that you guys put so much effort into making this whole thing work....you could have just sold us products and then ssaid goodbye, but the main thing about theis forum - the tech help - is invaluable. its a fine show of novatechs customer service, as well as the generousity of others not affiliated with nova who just want to help :) new ideas for the forum are always good, and need to be put to everyone before changes are made - but that process takes a long time (its like we are a commune and go bed hopping :D :D good old sweden). plus i rather liked the bit about the sea, kp. your poetic side is coming out!

And we do some HOTDOG research here into the best value for enthusiasts. I loved that GTX 480 thread where a lot of you did the benching! Truly groundbreaking stuff. :D
It's up to everyone to do good posts, and I for one love photos to make it more real. We are in a funny changeover to a sort of forum/social networking/chat kind of thing. Wonder where it will lead? :)

One thing is for sure. Some members with high post counts are still spamming serious technical threads to death with daft one-liners about what equipment they are buying next, or just to announce that they will try a bench later.
If you want to chat, why not start a new thread? Don't trash the techy stuff. It makes it unreadable. Don't want to get personal about it, because I hope today's nitwits will grow up quickly. But some of you are stretching people's patience. :D

Care to compile a list (one i feel i may grace in the top 3 if not top 5) of offenders?

Definitely not. Everyone will hate me, and I will drive away customers. Which would be bad. :D
Another pet hate of mine is people quoting long posts and then adding one line in comment. I mean, we can follow an argument...;)

Mate, I just say my piece. Once. How people respond is up to them. :D
You never win an argument. You just upset people. ;)

I did put out feelers for intelligent life in the universe to the famous AMD Fanbois site, semiaccurate, but actually got trashed in a different way by people who did extremely clever SPAM! :D

Don't waste time reading it, but it descended into something weird about 5 stage tessellation.
Very confusing. Don't think I'd want to get stuck in a bar with most of them. :rolleye:

I'm up for that, mate. Schmoobie the Cat has been kicked out in disgrace since he shat on my work gear when I fell asleep during Superbowl. :rolleye:
My time at semiaccurate wasn't entirely wasted. I wanted to keep my hero Charlie D in touch with our forum's splendid crossfire results with cheapie ATI cards. But he clearly has problems at his own forum with spammers. Half of them are NVidia fanbois, I reckon. :D

Hmmmm they seem to be talking about what aspects were blocking the card from being better :)
then they started arguing about whether they could claim aspects of the physical laws were bottlenecking it
and so on and so forth
then they started arguing over how many they should claim were affecting it
also something about one of them making up facts :S
Its odd seeing you as a junior member :L

Yeah, I was wondering how my tie got stuck to the carpet with molten chocolate. Oh no, it's not chocolate...:rolleye:
I wore a spare black tie to work, and told my dismal humourless supervisor why. He said "I'm not interested in excuses..."
Prat! He could have laughed...wouldn't have hurt. :D
In answer, Mr.Lime, the semiaccurate lot just wouldn't plain admit that the HD 5870 is a serious waste of money, albeit the furnace-like GTX 480 takes pointlessness to new levels. :td:

Ah they were trying to defend something indefensible?
To the death and further sort of stuff?
I ain't sure what Sky walker, Hobo,J2B,J Dowdell,Nox and the other guy's are up to but I would think they are at work as well without the internet access we have.
Well I can only speak for myself - I used to have a job I could do really easily, really quickly and had lots of free time. Around a year ago, I took a promotion and with that came a steep learning curve, very steep!! I'm gradually getting on top of it all and that's gradually giving me more free time, so I'm gradually getting on here more & more again :)
