Ok heres the thing. I play some games on pc like Bf2 and Counter strike. Apart from that I am a complete newbie to computers. I currently have 512mb of ram and was looking to upgrade to 1gb maybe 2gb of ram. I have no idea of my ram type or how to do find it out. My friend has just advised me to novatech as they are cheap and very reliable so help is grately appreciated. Thanks .

Thats the problem... I don't know how to find that out. What I do know is that my computer is a pacard bell with windows xp home edition.
It has intel pentium 4 cpu 2.93 ghz and 512 mb or ram.
I am on my device manager but don't know what to do from there.

When i first wanted to know the in's and out's of my PC i used a program called Everest Home edition, which you can download from here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

should supply you with the following information that shouldn't take you too long to find.

I.e type of RAM installed and the total number of Ram sockets avaible

Sorry can't help with CPU-z as i have never used it

the easiest way to check what ram you need is to take the original ram out and have a look whats printed on it. there will be a small sticker on the ram ether giving the speed in mhz or the type of ram like PC3200 or PC2700.

when you know what type ram you need if you see this page you can find the ram you need.

Ok im in the SPD section of memory on the everest download.

Device description: DIMM1: Micron Tech 8VDDT6565AG-40BDB
Seriel number C600DDE2h
Module size: 512mb (1 rank, 4 banks)
Memory Type DDR SDRAM
Memory Speed PC3200 (200 MHz)
Module Width 64 bit

Next to memory slots it just has slot #1 which is the 612mb PC3200 DDR SDRAM

Which I know is old as DDR3 ram is coming out or is out i think :S

so its 400mhz PC3200 ram that your system has installed at the moment.

here is a link to the ram that you need.

if your looking to go up to 2gb something like this ram would be a good choice.

Wow I didn't realise it was cheap. I was expecting to spend at least £100 for 2GB so £70 is great. What do i do now? I live fairly close to Bristol so should i go and buy it there to also get it installed? How much is installation? or do i just buy online and get a computer man to come to my house?

Why not install this your self? RAM is one of the easiest components to install and requires no setup, apart from physically installing the hardware in its sockets which you can't go wrong with.

Is there no installation? Just put in and go? As i am a computer newbie i have no idea where it goes and neither do either of my parents but they are willing to spend £15 to put it in so I wont complain
Am i supposed to know this stuff at 15?

normally we cant install hardware into non-novatech systems. if you wanted to give the guys in bristol a quick ring they may be able to install it for you.

if they cant installing ram is very easy, if you have a look in the guides section of this forum near the top of the page there is a post to a memory guide, in there it shows how to install more ram.

Can you post what Make / Model Motherboard and RAM you have?

Also try running MEMTEST86+ on your new RAM to make sure it isn't faulty.
