My disk drive just blew up in a puff of smoke. And no longer Reading my f1 hard drive is it possible that they both blew up due to me placing the hdd on top of the drive and shorting out?
It's probably the case just want a second opinion.
It's not good for me first my gtx260 now my blu ray drive and my f1 hdd it's starting to get expensive. :(

lots of circuitry under the hard drive, Sounds like you shorted it. I love the f3's

F3's are awesome drives. Quiet and fast. Simples

I really like my Seagate 7200.13...
I quite like the WD Black series of drives, although I like Raptor's and SSD's better if I can afford them :D
If you want speed, and can afford it, for for a Solid State Drive.
If you want the best storage/ speed ratio for the best amount of £££'s then the Samsung 1Tb F3 is my reccomends.
If energy efficiency is your concern, then Novatech have and AMAZINGLY low priced WD Green Power 800Gb currently on promotion:

This drive seems quite fast, large capacity, 64mb buffer, plus at a frankly amazing price. Bewst to read some reviews first though. I' don't know anything about this drive in particular. But WD drives have always been good to me.

I would hate to put all my eggs in one big basket. 800gb is a lot to back up and a lot to lose!

guy you should be suggesting answers to the problem first. possibly that they have shorted but the case of the dvd drive should be earthed as it is attached top the case. check for any burn marks on the hdd or dvd and see if there was any points of contact.
which one smoked dvd or hdd? any shorting should have been earthed? maybe some warranty claims here?

What PSU is running this system. So much product failing on your system. Possible PSU Faulty???

i agree with coops to check the psu as if it is dying it could send spikes of power down certain rails which would explain all you recent component failures.

hold up there guys if i remember his gtx260 was destroyed buy the hdd falling on to it and damaging the pcb.
but yes still if the psu is causing spike it could cause a jump across components, but still it should be earthed so i fail to see how its has happened?

Agree here, and Coops has already mentioned. IF his Blur ray drive + Gtx 260 has gone, then his HDD, then it must be either a short or faulty power supply).

That's what I was thinking too. Couldn't hurt to test your PSU to see if it's working properly.

1st thing, the graphics card was destroyed by the hdd falling on to it and knocking off resistors, not by the psu.
2nd thing, if the psu caused a spike there should be no jumping between components as the case of the dvd drive should be earthed. as the hdd was above it i suspect a set up of suspending the hdd, this means it would most likely not be earthed. but unless both components were not earthed there should be no damage.

...Therefore the individual components are faulty and he's having bad luck (?)
Buy and identical drive, take the controller board off and swap them over to get your data unless you want to send it off for costly data recovery.

If that ever happened to me, which it never has luckily, I would probably scream :D Tough luck though mate, Seems really rare something like that happens.
