I'm just looking at buying this motherboard
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... p?ASR-1333 (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.jsp?ASR-1333)
and a cheap intel dual core
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... p?IL-E2180 (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.jsp?IL-E2180)

and i was wondering if it would be good at overclocking, ive never overclocked before, is it an easy thing to do?

2 the processor YES YES 1000times yes that is a brilliant overclocker! lol but that mobo im not so praiseful of it would be adviseable to spend a bit more and get a intel 965/p35 or a nvidia 650i chipset as they are good overclockers around £50-£60 although they might be cheaper now and overclocking is easy if you know wat u r doin ask teknokid or sum1 as they are more experienced

The asus nvidia 650i board is a good little o/c for around £70 fitted it in my sons pc and he has it running better than my striker lol

The motherboard supports a 333FSB.
The cpu has a 200FSB.
The cpu has a 10x multiplier

This means......

At default the mobo is running at 200FSB x 10.
Providing the CPU is good enough the mobo will be able to run 333FSB x 10 = 3.33ghz.

So yes it should work.

BUT

Asrock are cheap mobos. You might not get CPU Vcore voltage control so wont be able to boost the voltage to the cpu. I don't know the defaults for the Exxxx series so can't really tell you what the limits are.

You can see my asrock O/C in my sig though. It's poor because my board is a 266FSB board and won't go past 300. You won't have this problem with this board, but I'd expect the CPU to need extra voltage as the 2.7/2.8 ghz mark

At the lower end, motherboard is as important as cpu when deciding on one for overclocking. At the high end they all do everything anyway so it comes down to luck. Try and get an intel or nvidia chipset for starters.

Is it possible to overclock without changing the vcore voltage, as it shortens the life of the chip, I would be using the stock fan so wouldn't be wanting to do a big overclock, maybe to around 2.6Ghz

nope, you have to raise volts to overclock, if u didnt, people wouldnt.

Yes it is. You can probably get to 2.6ghz without any vcore modification.

Edit: ^^ Just read you wanted 2.6ghz :p

Changing the vcore does not shorten the life of the chip as much as you may think.
