View Full Version : Ubuntu 10.4 on v14 4100?

Has anyone here tried installing Ubuntu on the v14 4100? I'm looking to buy it but really need Linux (mostly use kile, ssh, g++, etc) so the laptop is pretty much worthless if they're not compatible.
Some other flavor of Linux would also be fine.

Hi Sander314

I've just borrowed a V14 from our R&D guys and I'll do an install and a 'sudo lspci' report for you. I'll post back a bit later.

the HW is pretty similar to the V13 non? in which case, my colleague runs 10.04 on it without too much hassle.

The initial installation went in ok and I've run off the lspci (see below). I'll have a further investigation tomorrow when I've got a little more time.

Wow, thanks so much, that looks great. Wired and wireless connections both working?
Also: do you have a repcode I could use when I order?

Mike
27-05-2010, 07:40 PM
I can't say whether they work yet mostly because I didn't get much time to do much apart from the basic install. But I can advise more when I have a closer look tomorrow.

As for repcode I do have one but it's been lost in the depths of time (and my brain) :D

Thanks for offering, but most likely Mike will find out before that anyway. I think it's probably the same network device if it's a new v13, same description on the product page.

Ok so far so good. The sound, onboard wired network and the wireless network all work out of the box, although I noticed that the wifi was a little flakey. After doing an update it settled down ok.
The screen is detected at 1366x768 (16:9) @ 60Hz.

How did you get the wireless to work?
It does detect wlan0, but no networks and iwlist wlan0 scan succeeds instantly with an empty list.

- Update (incl kernel) doesn't help.
- Installing Realtek's official driver does worse than nothing, just gives network-interface (wlan0) pre-start process (...) terminated with status 1 etc. etc. and completely removes any mention of wlan0 from the system.

firstly have you installed the updates through the Ethernet? That may help a lot.

Yes, that's when I meant by 'update including kernel'.

Mike

I used the wired network port (RJ45). All the wired network required was enabling by clicking on the Network dropdown on the top of the desktop and then enable wifi.

Mike

Did you manage to resolve this?

Did you manage to resolve this?
Yes, after installing the 32 bit version and fiddling with the settings a bit I did get it to work. Not sure what it was in the end though.
I'm just testing it now from another location. Do get a slightly better connection, but it's very intermittent. Though probably this is just a result of the "multiple city-wide wireless networks" being nonexistent in some places and very poor in others.

Mike

Ahh that'll be it: I didn't try 64bit - only the 32bit. You'll probably notice a shorter range on the wifi mainly due to linux's tendency to use wifi drivers which work in software mode and don't auto adjust the power to pick up weaker signals.
