Because my PC has never really been able to support it, I've often left the pc section of RPG's alone. Just wondering if someone can recommend any from the last few years worth keeping an eye out when I nip into town look for some second hand, good quality games. Or even some more recent, I'm after ME2 on PC for definite but struggling to think of some others worth getting.

The elder Scrolls IV - Oblivion is a fabulous RPG IMHO - won a number of accolades and should be a decent price now. Also, before you get ME" - you should really do ME, not essential for ME2, but as you can keep your character and the impact your decisions made in the first game, worth picking up...

not a fan of rpg's personally but fallout 3 seems to be good for that sort of thing and all my friends love it so maybe worth a look? also mass effect, dead space and stalker seem to be a few pretty good series as well :)

I've done both ME1 and ME2 on the 360, which is why they're under consideration for on the PC. Elder scrolls is one I had forgotten about as its been so long since it came out now, fallout whilst I liked it it doesn't have the replay value for me; not entirely sure why.
To go off at a tangent, I picked up empire: total war and thats proven to be a pretty good game if anyone is into RTS's.

if you like that then i would suggest buying rome: total war as its by far the best in most people opinions, including mine :)

STALKER games are pretty **** sweet as long as you get the patches. Gothic games (with the poss exception of 3 which is still worth a try) are brilliant and as the guys said Fallout 3 is without equal.

Shooters on PC's have never really been my thing for some reason, I might get a pad and give that a bash for a fiver though. Not heard anything of these stalker games before, so I'll get looking at them. Anyone know much about Sacred 2 and Risen? Both the port overs to the 360 were dreadful so I avoided them but wondering if the PC versions which they were developed as are up to scratch.

I get a bit annoyed at overly complex RPGs where you have to collect points and equipment for this and that and constantly have to tweak your team and talents and weapons. Fallout 3 left me cold.
Mass Effect got me involved despite all that and was great, but I had a huge learning curve to climb with it. But ME2 is DEFINITELY on my shopping list.
Tomb Raider Legend and Far Cry were both excellently story driven, and I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. They both gave you the feeling of an adventure. You can find them in second-hand stores like CEX for a couple of quid, and that's a bargain. They still look good graphically.
Dragon Age/ Bioshock 1 & 2.

Fallout 3 is my single favourite game of last year and I am still working my way through the downloadable content. Im not a bit gamer anymore but it has just sucked my right in and I end up sitting on my rump unable to move for hours!
Bioshock is different but has similar traits, it is alot faster paced and more action orientated, nevertheless another incredible game that had me entertained for hours.

I've heard lot's of good things about Dragon Age : Origins, and I've tried to get into it myself on numerous occasions but always end up feeling a little bored playing it. I think the combat mechanic just doesn't do it for me in that game. Although the moral ambiguity present in a lot of the choices is very good and can have a real outcome in the game.

I have had the same problem somewhat with dragonage, its a good game but its just a case of its limited to a few buttons and thats it, you don't line it up - because of the lack of means to implement all the abilities they went for a less complicated method which was wrong. They could so easily have had done a bit more intuitively I prefer to play on my xbox pad, and something like X for standard weapon attacks, if you have a shield then B for block, Y for shield bash etc, then used RB and LB to bring up other abilities too and the fighting would have actually been down to you then.
As a mage it wasn't too bad, but it was fairly tedious fighting as melee.

I've just bought Morrowind with Bloodmoon and Tribunal for 4.99, and now I'm trying to ge tto work on ubuntu lol. But if your thinking of playing oblivion, do these first. There is probably a minimum of 600 hours gaming with these. Recommended for rpg affectionados, even if it is an old game, still good fun.
I love Bethesda RPGs (especially Morrowind and Fallout 3) - but I also love some of the really old DOS based stuff like StoneKeep, Dungeon Master (the only game where you could kill yourself by mistyping your movements ahead of time and head butting a wall to death :D) and Champions of Krynn (all of which can be played through DOSBox (http://www.dosbox.com/)). If anyone decides to play the DOS based ones keep them in windowed mode - VGA and EGA display modes make your eyes water on a 22 inch monitor in full screen :D

You havent played an RPG until you've heard Minsc's batttlecry roar across the isometrically displayed location...
For me, MUST PLAY RPGs consist of (but arent limited to)
Baldur's Gate 2 and Throne of Bhaal
Neverwinter Nights 1 (and all expansions)
Neverwinter Nights 2 (and only the Mask of The Betrayer expansion)
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2
Dragin Age Origins
FallOut 3
Oblivion
Hmmm... The lure of another AD&D venture from Candlekeep is strong... Very strong... Strong enough to pull me away from another fragfest in Battlefield Bad COmnpany 2 tonight? Only time will tell!

really enjoyed KOTOR myself, didn't think 2 was as good though (not as fresh) and a definate vote for Oblivion (with distant terrain texture mods) and Fallout 3 here, Morrowind is a bit harder to get into (no compass), but is well worth it and there are plenty of good mods out there

Thanks pilgrim, sizable list of recommendations there, should definitely keep me going for a number of months there. I've really hammered Dragonage on the xbox, is there any differences that really make the PC version worth getting (had 5 or 6 playthroughs on the 360).

Almost forgot Planescape Torment --- the much more edgy and dark Baldurs Gate (by the same company) with Q from Star Trek as a flying talking skull. Not bad.

Been playing Mass Effect 2 a lot recently, and Risen thoroughly enjoyed both of those. Had to limit getting more games as my HDD has only got 10gb of space left, and ironically buying games (and the world cup) has cost me the money I was saving up to buy an SSD lol.

Does this come under the heading having your cake but not being able to eat it? lol
I agree with Steve: Planscape Torment is awesome.

Pretty much lol, building the SSD fund back up though. I'll have to look at getting Planescape Torment then, decided to pull out one of my old HDD's for an extra 150GB for now, should help tide me over a bit.

I know this thread is a little old but i thought i would add the Witcher in to the mix especially the enhanced edition, well i liked it :D and as mentiond stalker is great as well with the 2009 graphics mod.
If your into hack n slash type rpgs torchlight is pretty good and has some neat mods for it as well.

Fallout 3 left me cold.
really? I'm quite enjoying it so far... not an RPG fan, but F3 has just enough RPG to not be a stats fest and plenty of FPS to keep it fun (ok, i have only just arrived at megaton...)

I've got so many games now I'm struggling to progress on them all lol, I had got some money and meant to buy my SSD and triple channel RAM, but I went through the city centre first and went on a games binge lol.
Borderlands, Fallout 3, Dragon Age Origins & the expansion + dlc's and several others I've barely gotten touched on. Torchlight does look pretty good, I was hoping Red Dead Redemption and Alan Wake would be on PC, but haven't seen anything on them yet.

So far alan wake is a xbox 360 exclusive unless Microsoft choose to change that as they are the publishers.
as for Red dead, rockstar / take 2 do eventually bring their games to the PC lets just hope when and if they do bring red dead it's not GTA IV all over again.

Yea, Alan Wake really would be awesome on a PC though I think, same with Red Dead just because after playing Mass Effect 2 and DragonAge on both, the PC versions just seem so much better.

Dragon Age: Origins is a really good game but takes time to get in to. Do NOT bother with the Xbox360 version; if you're to play you literally have to go for the PC edition - it really is like chalk and cheese.
Also agree with Elder Scrolls. Fallout 3 I found really poor but I "appreciated" it.
Dragon age on the PC like Tubey said don't bother the console version
Get the Dragon age: ultimate edition it's about £18 and you get
Dragon age: Origins
Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening Expansion Pack
plus All Seven Content Packs
It's good value for money and you'll find yourself occupied for months with all that.
