Just got my new Explora E16, installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it and on the whole very pleased so far. But when trying to connect it to my TV using an HDMI lead, the laptop's audio is not being routed to the TV. The picture looks great but there's no sound.
I'm no expert on HDMI etc so maybe my expectations are out. Do I have to feed the audio into the TV via some other cable? Using the same HDMI cable to connect a bluray/dvd player to the TV works fine, so it's not the cable or the TV at fault.
Has anyone got this kind of thing working? I'd appreciate any tips. My google searches haven't turned up anything useful yet...
cheers,
RG
EDIT: I should add that under "Sound Preferences" in the Output tab I have selected "Radeon X1200 Series Audio Controller Digital Stereo (HDMI)"...

Yes, remarkably, the first thing I thought of when no sound came out was "let's try turning the volume up".
also try another program to output sound?
The only thing I tried was Firefox+Flash running BBC iPlayer, which works fine through the laptop's internal speaker. Not sure I have much else that produces sound at the moment, I suppose I could try playing a CD or DVD though.

i think the iplayer has no specification over what sound card to output too. so i think it will send to the primary sound device but as you have totally no sound i don't think this will apply.
its always good to use another program just to identify if its hardware or software.

you need to make sure you have set windows to use digital audio as the default playback device, i imagine the laptop is still trying to use the laptops speakers. you can change the playback device in control panel.

Explora E16 does not have HDMI acording to this:

it has a 1 x 15pin Dsub, so either you have a different laptop or the description on the website is wrong.

Err... but this is the Linux forum and I specifically mentioned Ubuntu. So how/why would I set "windows" to do anything...?

Well, I definitely have the Explora E16. That's what I ordered and that's what it says on the invoice. In all other respects it matches the description on the web page, so I assume they've just omitted the existence of the HDMI socket for some reason (maybe a recent spec change from the original manufacturer, who knows...)
