sorry for the noob question, but if i buy a DirectX 10 graphics card, will it work with directX 9 or below games. The graphics card im interested in is the HD 2900XT 1024MB card and it would be games like, ArmA, Dirt etc. Also some games say they require pixel shader 2.0 or 3.0 and the 2900XT is shader 4.0 so would there be any compatibility isusses. Thanks in advance, Paul.

Yes they are all dx9 compatible and no known issues to my knowledge. Even tho that card has a gig of memory it still isnt better than a 8800 gtx for the same money, the gtx is still the card of choice at the moment.

the GB memory shows no actual performance increase that would be noticable. i love ATI/AMD but the 8800's are so much better

You could do with a gfx card if you only watch films and dont do any gaming i would go for the lower end ati cards as they offer great video playback or if you do game then the 8800gt is the ulitmate for both dvd playback and gaming!!

You need the x264 codec. they are usually .mkv files.

i am going with the Albatron 8600GT. should be here tomorrow morning hopefully! want to crank it up so badly.

I actually asked about the h.264 because i wanted to convert it to normal mp4 so i can play it on my ps3.

Oh and as i said..... i will not pay that much money for a graphics card lol.
i mean i do alot of gaming but i still don't need that much power yet

x264 is part of mpeg4 or something. I'd say it is, but video codecs are never that simple, but yeah x264 are usually bluray/hddvd/hdtv rips

Well if your a gamer and you'd pay that for your mobo and cpu then why not for your gpu? Its all relative in my eyes but each too their own and all that, its what makes the world go round lol!!! In 1 years time those of us that spent a little extra wont be getting 10fps on the new games and be looking to buy another card again!!
