View Full Version : AMD X2 4200
Hi,
I'm thinking of doing a processor upgrade to an AMD 64 x2 4200 processor, my current system is a foxconn CK-NF4 mobo with a AMD 64 3000 processor
The board is a 939 style with PCI Express Nforce 4 standard chipset
am I right in thinking that 939 mobos will take the X2 cpu?
or is it worth upgrading both mobo and cpu?
bearing in mind that I'd prefer a staged upgrade path

Did you build this system yourself
If so then look on the box for CPU support
Look on the manufacturers webby
Or if the board is not dual core ready "already" then it would just need a quick bios update.
No point in upgrading the whole board unless you are going to upgrade to SLI/crossfire, 1 pci-e will do fine
939 mobos do take X2's but some wont support it until you do a bios update.
Do you overclock, you could get a X2 3800 and overclock it , save you £50 and some X2 3800's OC'd can beat a X2 4800 (from what ive seen anyway
Yes, this system has a direct pedigree going back to 1994 :)
The Board was part of a novatech bundle about 5 months ago when I got Mobo CPU and memory
Never really got into over clocking in a big way, too much effort I'm afraid :)
I work with the things all day and dislike the idea of constantly tweaking them all night as well LOL
Thanks for the advice, I shall pay some more attention to the manu website :)

i think that overclocking is easy, oc'd my cpu to its max (temp and spec wise) in about half hour
If you install the new cpu and you dont see any performance, then look on the manu website and get the update
i would bite the bullet and go skt am2 it costs more but is more future proofed.

If your concerned about the Socket 939 being pretty much dead, then either go for socket AM2 or 775 which would give you a bit more time for upgrading in the future.

What remains of the 1994 system? The keyboard?
In 1994 I had a p90 and I could play a couple of DOS games (anyone remember Dope Wars?)
