Shocking article in the Telegraph yesterday. American kids 11-18 now spend 11 hours a day connected to an electronic gadget of some sort!

90% of these US males and 70% of females are predicted to end up fat due to lack of exercise/poor diet and lifestyle.

To make a PC uses 1.8 tons of materials. To extract the gold for a single mobile phone creates 220lbs of waste rock. 500m old mobile phones are sitting in US drawers and americans throw away 100m phones and computers a year generating 1m tonnes of toxic lead/cadmium etc. waste which is dumped in landfill and causes birth defects in China, which dumps 50m tons of toxic waste a year as the worlds waste disposal "expert".

The whole thing is quite unsustainable. Every business and government is promoting the internet, but is it making kids brighter? The answer is No. 78% of kids now fail 8th. grade English and are scarcely literate. Many colleges have noted that providing laptops actually reduce kids educational achievements, since they use them to waste time with violent games, social sites for relative strangers and, er, pron.

Some people might say, "So, wassa problem with gadgets?" But as an internet junkie myself, I gotta wonder if I would do better to find better uses for my time than staring at a glowing screen. It's about time we questioned where we are going on this. :rolleye:

I find it very sad and worried when i read stuff like this. We don't seem to realize what the consequences of this life style that many people are into now of just sitting at a computer all day. No one seems to be thinking about the serious problems that lay ahead if we keep going on like this which we probably will. In the end somethings going to happen and people are suddenly going to start getting scared and we going to have a real crisis on our hands. The simple fact is we can't go on like this and we better start realizing this.

My workmate, Dave was going round telling everyone who would listen that he has the latest iPhone:

That is apparently his deceased father in law's glass eye! v v funny bloke, our Dave. :D

But yes, you see people on train platforms at 5AM fiddling with what? Facebook? Passengers on trains living in a world of their own with headphones too...

This is a strange new world we are living in. I have decided to cut down on my gadget time. Maybe talk to people instead and read more. I could save £30 a month on phones, £20 a month on broadband, £12 a month on TV license potentially. It's worth thinking about, because these gadgets are more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol, and may just be a blind alley. Now gotta go. Things to do.

I think the key thing here is moderation though. Personally i try and strike a healthy balance in my life by enjoying playing my games and going on these forums and facebook etc but also make time for spending time with my family during the day and friends at night. Some people have really bad habits now but fortunately i dont really know anyone with such problems.

URggh... do have to agree with this!

Around 3 years ago, I have a stint where I had no internet access or PC access for almost a year. I remember back then that I acctually got some other hobbies that weren't PC related. I rode my BMX waay more, started to do some painting and I think, was alot better off.

Now I have my PC back, I get on my BMX about once a week, dont paint, and spend most of my time just on the net....

I might "ban" myself from all electronics for a week!

i think that internet has become a victim of its own success...

overloaded with inaccessable information#? for what use?

filled with lies mixed in with truths...

people are more happy to talk in text to someone they will never meet yet pass on the opportunity every day to not talk to someone right next to them :/

Genius... I wouldn't just walk into a room with people talking about computers at random, or just join in on a debate on how the Internet has taken over.

i dont mean to say that its a bad thing as it is easier to network with peoiple of similar hobbies etc but it is always best to mix the people you do talk to. afterall a stranger is often simply a friend you havent yet met.

or a peepy creado who hasnt yet had the opportunity :/
