When I click on Shut down I get the message saving settings and then shutting down, But then I get a blue screen with a Stop Error on it as follows, Stop 0x0000008E (0x00000046,0x81CB1947,0x966BEE44,0x00000000). This stays on the screen and I have to turn the power off. When I restart the computer I get the message that windows did not shut down properly.
Otherwise the computer seems to be working fine.
Any Ideas?

Tried both the links from your link. A memory test showed no problem, and the other link did not work.
generally speaking, update all your drivers to start with, and make sure windows is patched. when did this start happening, and what did you do previous to it starting?

Thanks for your help.
After some investigation of the start up files I have found the problem to be a program called Spyware Doctor, which I have now uninstalled.
The computer now shuts down properly.

Hi: I have experienced the same problem as Noddes. When Spyware Doctor (SD) is active (running in the background) Vista will not shut down. I receive an error message, the computer reboots and it asks if I want to start normally or other choices including Safe Mode. If I restart in Safe Mode I can shut the computer down from Safe Mode. Also, if I close SD (from icon in system tray) before I shut down the computer shuts down OK.
I find it's best to open SD, use it to scan the computer and then shut it down, before I forget. I had already purchased the program before I discovered the problems. From the reviews I had read I really didn't expect the program to have a glitch.
