View Full Version : Icon AM2 4200, am I being stupid?

I have just taken delivery of an Icon 4200 for my younger sister. She uses her computer to produce documents for her university course so she needs a back up solution. Her old machine has a DVD-RW drive and I did not anticipate a problem transplanting this into her new machine in place of the supplied DVD-ROM.

However, the right hand side of the case appears to be pop-rivetted into place, and the DVD drive is screwed in on both sides (actually it has a nifty catch system on the left hand side, but this is not the side presenting the problem!).

Am I missing something obvious? Surely it must be possible to remove the DVD drive without drilling out the rivets holding the case together?

unscrew it and it should just slide out the front, can you present us with a pic or a case model??

thanks for your reply, here are pics of the front, side, and back.

as you can see the right hand side of the case is riveted on at the back. On the left hand side there is a clip mechanism which holds the drive in place. By unclipping this, I can slide the DVD drive forward about 1 inch, but the screws bind on the front of the case at this point. I have tried removing the screws on the accessible side, but there appear to be corresponding screws on the far side which cannot be accessed without removing the riveted right hand case side.

This is quite common these days, the optical drive is only secured on the side you have access to, on the other side there will be some kind of holding gripping system either rubber grippers or spring type metal catches. If you just unlock the side you have access to pthen push the drive from the back you should find it will push out with a small ammount of pressure.

same as above
Follow the instructions on the black bit to unlock it, then give it a nudge from the back and it should just slide out the front

thanks for your help guys, I have now solved the problem!

it turns out that yes I was missing something, the front pannel is held on with clippy doofers (thats a technical term you know). A little squeeze on the clippy things allows you to remove the whole front pannel of the machine, and from that point the drives are easy to remove by operating the big black clip on the accessable side and sliding them out.

Having figured this out, I'm very impressed by the quality of the build on this machine considering it's low price. Rolled corners all around the case, screwless drive extraction (as long as you're not a fool like me! lol). Full marks!
