I'm vaguely thinking in terms of dual gigabit (and I do notice the difference with this and 100 with the media files/mythtv use)

A bit OT perhaps but a comment on what I noticed when I did the last leg (which joined my own box in) at home to Gigabit with mythtv. Either will work well for tv recordings, music, etc. but my (at least percieved by me) difference comes in with the, I suppose "start up times". I don't seem to have to wait as long (say a second vs 5 seconds) for an audio track or tv recording to start to play etc. It just seems that bit more "responsive" to me.

Rigth, sorry this is back to front but I'll try to "restore" from my mess up last night.

Basically we have too many PCs and I want to try to combine some things next year. There is a web server that is always on, a mythtv backend that is on a lot of the time during the day and another PC that fires up at night to take some backups from the web server.

I want to extend things to add some general file sharing, running my own java X10 program and possibly some other bits and pieces that may crop up. Even though I want just one PC, I definately want to keep the web server separate with it's own network card and virtual machine. I would be using OpenSuse and I would think XEN for virtual servers.

I'm wondering how people others might go about this, eg. 2 or 3 virtual servers?

And what sort of hardware spec? I can say that none of the current tasks are particularly demanding, the web server and mythtv server both having run happily on AMD 64 3000s with 1GB RAM and would run on less but am unsure what happens with virtual servers.

My own vague notions at the moment is to try to build something around one of the E/low power AMD (who I'd prefer to use) Athlon Quad cores and am prepared to go up to 8GB with RAM, know I only need a basic graphics card and that I will want a few hard disks...

I'm just wondering what others with Linux might do for this and am looking for some system specs and or ideas that I may float around in my head and perhaps use.
