I have a compaq presario 2100 laptop with only a cdrw. i would like to change to a dvdrw is it possible if so what make should i choose. Do you have to install the new drivers for it before replacing cdrw with dvdrw.

at worst it should only use the cd drivers, but 9 times out of 10 it will correctly identify itself.

just make sure the connectors and power connectors are the same for the new one. you may need a new bios, but that wld be worst senario.
If it is a drive to fit your notebook, you will need to buy a proprietary drive from HP.
The Part number is probably 319423-001, But you are best to check at HP's partsurfer website and check through using the part number found on your laptop.
Compaq Presario 2100 series (http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main?sel_flg=modsrch&template=main&cpric=&prodsrch=PRESARIO+2100&submit.x=0&submit.y=0)

This would probably be more expensive than buying an External USB Drive, which would probably outlive the Laptop.
