If you are trying to use the '@' key on your keyboard and it keeps coming up with " this is because your keyboard is set to US rather than UK. To fix this follow the instructions below:
1. Click Start
2. Click Control Panel
3. Double Click Regional and Language Options
4. Click the Languages Tab
5. Click Details
6. Click Add and add UK as an input language.
7. Change to UK layout and remove US.
8. Apply the settings and reboot the system.
After the reboot the keys should work correctly.

Having the # instead of the £ indicates that you are running under US settings for your keyboard.
Control Panel > Regional Settings > Languages Tab > Details >
Ensure that you are running under UK/UK.
I have found that you may need to remove the English US entry to get it to use the English UK entry every time.

The keyboard layout is actually set in the os, buddy so all keyboards are US if the os reads them like that ;)

During install of the O\S I usually add the UK language and keyboard settings then remove the US one, this ensures that when you start typing it will always give the UK symbols, including the £ sign.
As someone has already said, go into control panel, regional settings, and change the KB language to UK instead of US, US is normally the default setting
haha my brothers comp has this problem he will probably be delighted if i tell him how to change it ^^

Way back yonder I was afflicted by this 'issue'. I'd reformated for the first time ever and my keyboard wasn't working right after. I racked my brains and deduced that the keyboard was faulty. Dived off to PC World for a replacement only to find that that one was faulty too! I felt a tad silly when I managed to fix both keyboards in one fell swoop a couple of weeks later.

This is a very good point and one that should be taken into account when installing an Operating System! In addition another point to add is to consider the keyboard size, as for some reason I have had a linux Distribution in the past get the keyboard size wrong! Just a warning!

i had the exact same problem, i was bugging me for years untill i got round to looking into it. Its one of thoes annoying vista things. On xp it lets you set this up whilst you install the operating system
I've been advising our customers for years on this and always wondered why Microsoft made changing the regional options over so long winded.
But atleast they took care of that in Vista and now in 7.

Alt and Shift changes the regions in 1 key press :) - this is probably why most people have the issue in the first place as it's not hard to press that combination when you're ALT + TAB'n heh.
Doesn't look like it's been mentioned here already.... enjoy messing around on peoples comps lol :D (Not sure if this works on Windows7 though)

I have to do things the other way 'round as I have my kb from Australia (not looking forward to the day it needs replacing). Drives me batty when I need to use a UK keyboard.
FYI alt+0163 (numpad numbers) will give you the pound sign if you're on a kb layout without it.

This is a raise a smile thread to me, I remember sometime around 1999 I had this issue and it took me days to sort out, bless the internet (which I didn't have back then) for solution's.
