View Full Version : EA Spending $100 Million To Beat Call Of Duty With Battlefield 3

EA has not been shy at all about its intentions to take on rival publisher Activision's ever-popular Call of Duty franchise head-on with the upcoming Battlefield 3. Just how bad does EA want the first-person shooter crown? Bad enough that it's planning to drop $100 million on an aggressive ad campaign.
Battlefield 3 Blog (http://bf3blog.com/2011/04/battlefield-3-launching-this-november-with-a-100-million-ad-campaign/) reports that EA CEO John Riccitiello revealed the astounding figure at the Ad Age Conference in New York. Riccitiello said that Battlefield 3 "is designed to take down [Modern Warfare 3]," and clearly the amount EA is spending on advertising will match that desire.
$100 million is an awful lot of money. Partnered with Call of Duty fatigue and the recent trouble with Infinity Ward, do you think that's enough for EA to have a shot at overtaking Activision, or is that still just wishful thinking?

If it works it'll be darn worth it though, They'll make more than twice of the marketing costs if it overtakes call of duty

I get the opposite. From what I've been reading DICE seem to have taken notice of the criticisms of games like COD and Crysis being consolified and are making a concerted effort to keep PC gamers happy.

64 player server vs 24 player on consoles
proper keyboard+mouse support and Dx11 support
i wish EA isn't dropping so much on advertising, rather them drop it on DICE, but i am very sure BF3 will be sooooo much better than CoD. it's got jets!

I despise the call of duty games with a passion, after COD4 they've just spewed out a load of rubbish in my opinion...Here's hoping the true kings of online FPS gaming will dominate the market once again :)

This game isn't going to run on PC using DX9 (no windows XP) so not sure how well it is going to work on XBX360.
Personally I think it is GREAT to see a PC game that is making NO COMPROMISE for consoles and isn't going the way of Crysis2 which personally I felt could have been so much more but for the fact they wanted it to run on console platforms as well as PC.
The tricky thing for them using DX10+ only is that WinXP is still the most popular gaming platform in the world (PC-Wise that is..) so interesting to see them make this bold move and this might be the game that forces PC Games Tech onwards into the next generation.

Tbh I think most gamers today have upgraded to a DX10 OS (Vista or Win7) or are in the process of doing so seeing as DX11 is quickly becoming a primary tool for game devs to work with and to keep their new games up to date with the most recent graphics to be expected on PC.
Anyway you have what... 4 and a bit months till Launch.... plenty of time to get a new OS (and GPU, CPU, PSU, RAM etc etc haha)

This is why a game that should have a RRP of £15 is going to be £45
Sorry but it's a fact, the advertising has to come from somewhere and when you talk that sort of figure it's only going to come from one place....YOU! :rolleye:

BF3 is selling at £30 everywhere.
only Activision's massive CoD campaign gets money from customers. just look at their MW2, Blops campaigns, and their ultra-high price on launch: £40.
(all prices are for PC)

Still too much though even @ £30, it's just like a pro footballer contract, you pay £30 per match so he can have a 5 figure pw salary.
