what kind of cpu is it? it will also depend on how hot the temperature is

wait, lets get this straight

bought a new cpu and fan to replace the old cpu and fan. the new fan is just supposed to clip on but it wont, is it usual to use excessive force to get the fan on? coz i mean i was pushing down hard, i was scared any harder and it would brak the mobo.

What did you buy? If its an intel u have to check that the clips are turn in the right direction or they wont stay in position, just turn them and study the way they work and you'll see how to position them!!

nope its an AMD socket 939 clip thing really annoying coz i can get one hook on but the other wont, but i think the fan is to big for the mobo anyway its a tight squeeze and its up against the RAM modules.
Would the fan already in there work for a dual core processor? at the moment its an athlon64 3500, and i want to upgrade it to an athlon64 4200 x2
this is my existing fan http://www.akasa.co.uk/akasa_english/spec_page/coolers/spec_ak_860.htm
it appears under the athlon 64 section and not the athlon x2 section but its the same socket so i persume it will be ok it runs at 2700rpm? is that enough, do the dual core chips generate more heat?

if the old one goes on easily, then use that
My heatsink requires a bit of force (stock heatsink), nothing too hard

thats fine matey
if u think it is too hot, then turn on cool n quiet, that should help
also
how are you getting these temps?? what program??

I have to agree with taxation on this one. Putting on cool and quiet does make a **** of a difference hence why at 2.6ghz it was on a solid 35 degrees but my mates was on 50 degrees

i used to have cool n quiet on all the time, gaming doesnt take too much of a hit, if at all, and when surfing the net or listening to music, the lower temps mean that u can have a near silent computer whilst watching films :D

in the bios
then in power management (control panel)
use "core temp" this will give you the proper temperature!
