Setting up wireless security

I'm struggling to set up the wireless security on my Addon GWAR3000. It asks me to input hexadecimal keys. Are these just made up numbers or do they have to be specific types. My Maxfire laptop is 54g enabled and has a built in MSI card. Does it need anything? If so, how do I do it :?

I've now managed to get the key to be accepted, but I cannot get the laptop to connect now, despite entering the same key. WIndows gives me restricted or limited access :?
