Is it the mobo or the processor which mainly determines the speed of a pc?

The only reason im upgrading is because i need a PCIE slot. Would buying a cheap PCIE mobo be OK or would it slow down the PC?

This is what i have atm:

The motherboard chipset will effect the speed but not by loads if you have a half decent cpu, whats your budget?

This is your only option!!http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?ASU-K8VVM

Same board is £6 cheaper at scan

i would say its your Processor which determines the speed of your pc. the mobo just helps it run and do all its jobs. if you've got a rubbish mobo then it will be harder for the CPU to work to its full potential.
(never buy a dell mobo lol)

hmm thanks, i was going to buy a motherboard bundle but then thought why don't i get a cheaper mobo and spend the extra cash on a better processor.. but then would i have to buy a heat sink and fan etc too?

Tharpe

thats what i would do. id look for the cheapest mobo that could house the processor i wanted and buy it. :)

yeah you'd have to buy the Heatsink and fan. but they are loose change prices usually. you can pick up v cheap fans from Novatech.

Just noticed your current processor lol its exactly the same as mine!
our 939 mobos can run 2 dual core processors, the AMD X2 4200
its £50 from Novatech, and the AMD X2 4400

Link for 4200
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prod ... z1p0s0n0m0 (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/products/a939x1y0z1p0s0n0m0)

on the catalog booklet you can buy an AMD x2 4400 for £111 for 939 socket mobo i think you have to pick that up from Portsmouth depo though.

all you need then is a better Graphics card. which can be surprisingly cheap!
don't fork out too much money until you consider looking at the mobo you already have! =)

take a look at this:
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/dirr ... html?s=939 (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/dirresults.html?s=939)

you could go on for ages, but motherboards have a relatively small impact on speed compared to cpu, ram and gfx card. Each of which are faster at doing something than the other two.

Thanks Tharpe, but i need to change my mobo cos i want a 8800gt.

I was going to buy a bundle but now i think ill get a cheap mobo, average cpu and the 8800gt.

edit:

what about something like this (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/126701/show_product_specifications) , it has pcie which i need and 5.1 sound which is handy. Its ATX and supports Core 2 Duo! Would there be any problems in buyign such a cheap mobo?

motherboards can help your performance, but having a rubbish cpu on a great motherboard wont make it perform like a great cpu.
It's all about balance, nothing thats too powerful in one area

eg, getting 2 8800gtx ultra's or whatever and putting them with 512mb RAM and a 1ghz celeron/sempron

or getting a 8800gt with a q6600 and 2GB ram

i wonder which will perform better

How much you got to spend is the easiest way i think

Jleagle

Well i don't really have a hard limit, id rather save and get something good than buy something just because i couldn't afford anything else. I want something that isn't going to bottleneck a 8800gt.

as i don't know much about mobos do you think it may be better off to buy a bundle.. i had my eye on this one http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... MBB-E6262G (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?MBB-E6262G)

tell us the absolute max that you would go to. keeping in mind that you can buy top of the range for under 1K! compare this to last year, or pcworld

£228 thats what i would go for good cheap board to allow you to oc and good ram and decent cpu

Even if you went with this cpu you'd be £176 and a loads better mobo and ram and same cpu at a cheaper price!!!!!

I don't really want to spend more than what Jonny2Bad just posted (£230). Id need to buy a heat sink and fan too so maybe get cheaper ram like 667 or something. and possibly a cheaper mobo?

Im not too interested but if its easy without creating more heat/noise ill give it a go :)

Jleagle
05-11-2007, 11:34 PM
OK i like that cpu you posted http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... l?IL-E2180 (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?IL-E2180) and this ram seems pretty good too.. http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... CSR-VS662G (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?CSR-VS662G) now i just have to set my mind on a mobo!

All id like is a pcie slot for a 8800gt and 5.1 sound.

Jonny2Bad
06-11-2007, 08:33 AM
Well if you go for the lesser cpu then you can get a hsf and still be under£200 that mobo is a good mobo for overclocking and very reasonably priced

Jleagle
06-11-2007, 09:59 AM
If mobos don't determine the speed of a pc (much) what would overclocking it do?

Jonny2Bad
06-11-2007, 10:06 AM
Turn your cpu into a decent 3ghz per core cpu dont worry about that yet just sort your bits out lol

Jleagle
06-11-2007, 10:08 AM
lol ok thanks alot for your help, ill start a thread later about overclocking to see how it all works :)

Thanks Tharpe, but i need to change my mobo cos i want a 8800gt.

I was going to buy a bundle but now i think ill get a cheap mobo, average cpu ('http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/products/a561x1y0z1p0s0n0m0') and the 8800gt.

nope that looks good v cheap for what it is. :)
what exactly is wrong with your old mobo? cos the one i have with your processor can run an 8800GT does it have only PCI slots? and not PCI-E or does it have AGP?

that will run an 8800GT just make sure you have at least a 350watt power supply. go for 400 just to be safe! :)

Tharpe
06-11-2007, 07:34 PM
:) if you dont want to spend too much and dont care about SLI get that mobo The CPU you like ( Intel Dual Core E2180 2 x 2.0Ghz. ) also get the memory you were shown.
pick up a heatsink and fan for like £20 each and your all set! :)

Jleagle
06-11-2007, 07:59 PM
ok so:

cpu (£54)
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... l?IL-E2180 (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?IL-E2180)

memory (£43)
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... CSR-VS662G (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?CSR-VS662G)
or (£53)
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... CSR-HX6425 (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?CSR-HX6425)

mobo (£70)
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... MSI-P35N2F (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?MSI-P35N2F)

1. any ideas on a super quiet 775 heat sink and fan?
2. i already have 2 sticks of (probably slow) 512 ram, can i add these to the 2 sticks of 1g ram and have 3gb total with 32bit vista?

Jonny2Bad
06-11-2007, 09:24 PM
Dont add slower sticks of ram to those it will bring the other ram down to the slower speed!!! Just go for the artic cooler 7 its cheap and effective!!

JDowdall
06-11-2007, 09:58 PM
good cooler! my m8 just bought one and brought his temps down by 10 degrees, mine... not so much :p but thats not the coolers fault thats the **** airflow in my pc

Tharpe

its usually the more expensive the quieter lol.
if you look on the PDF catalogue you can download on the site. it tells you the decibels the Fans give off. it may do on the website too actually. i havent checked lol.

the one those guys are talking about sounds good maybe have a look at it?

the Cpu and mobo are good.

Get the geil black dragon.
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... GEL-BD642G (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?GEL-BD642G)

It's not the best ram but the corsair stuff is no better. They don't use the expensive ram chips anymore (micron d9's) and the XMS6400-C4 I bought was manufactured in the 24th week of 2006!

Jleagle
09-11-2007, 07:35 PM
So your saying this http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... GEL-BD642G (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?GEL-BD642G) is just as good as this http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... CSR-HX6425 (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?CSR-HX6425) but cheaper because they use cheaper chips?

Thanks.

What makes the corsair good? The first revisions are good, then they start using cheaper chips and increase profits.

I'd imagine the geil chips are cheaper since it is a pretty new model of memory whereas the corsair is old memory and probably been sat on the shelf since it's price was £150!

geil stuff is good :P
