Crossfire 2 USB problems

There is something wrong with my USB!!
firstly, the usb potes are apparently USB 1.1, not USB 2.0, even though the device manager shows a USB 2.0 hub installed.

Secondly, and more recently, the USB ports have been malfunctioning, randomly disconnecting my periperals, and then not recognizing them when they are connected again.
What can I do to rectify either problem?

have you got service pack 2?

USB2 support is a bit wobbly in XP without it

Just to confirm that I am running XP home with service pack 2.
The problem is apparently that although a 6 port USB 2.0 hub exists within the laptop, it is not connected to the external ports, which are apparently connected to another USB1.1 hub internally. The aforementioned USB1.1 hub is aparrently faulty, and has an unreliable connection

I would start up your machine in safe mode,

remove all traces of all drivers from device manager for the USB drivers, reboot and let all of those reload,

then plug in your USB devices one at a time.
