View Full Version : upgrade graphics on matrix
I have the Matrix laptop with the Geforce 4go 32m graphics card. Can i upgrade this card?
I have been offered a Radeon 9700 laptop card. Have no idea if it will fit or not.
Also, can the CPU be upgraded on this laptop..ie will the motherboard take a P4? Currently has a Celeron 2.0Ghz.
Thanks

hello, unfortunately its not possible to upgrade the video card in the laptop as it is built into the motherboard. as far as i can remember with these laptops you can change the amount of shared video memory in the bios. i think it can be set to a maximum of 128mb.
please can you let me know the stock code of the laptop so i can check what cpu's it will take.
Many thanks for your reply.
Here's all the codes on the back of the laptop:
Product Code - NNB-152
Serial Number - 7055103-019
Model Number - 8640
2nd Serial Number - PNB402061230
I know it uses the SIS chipset, which should/hopefully mean it will support the Northwood P4.
The Geforce uses 32Mb of dedicated memory, no shared memory. Thats what lead me to believe it was a card rather than built into the motherboard.
Finally, I did phone the Tech support line last week because the laptop has been crashing randomly, no real pattern. Told it was a heat problem but not so sure. As the laptop is out of warranty I took it apart and the fan is spinning fine. The CPU is not getting too hot. But the HDD is red hot. Plus the HDD has a click. I think the HDD maybe locking up.
I noticed on another thread you gave a link to a download page for drivers and bios. Would it be possible for a similiar link for this model laptop.
Many thanks
Russ

the laptop is a mitac 8640. drivers and information can be found here.

this sites down at the moment but it should be back up and running soon.
here is a copy of the spec sheet for the laptop.

Many thanks for that. Hopefully the driver/bios link will be back up soon. But the spec sheet has already proved useful.
