Hello, my dad is looking for a cheap upgrade, I told him this is a good upgrade to go for as I have the same chip but the D915, 2,8GHz with 4MB cache, was a lot more expensive when I got it :D
Can you tell me if the CPU comes with a cooler? It doesn't state it any where!
Thanks, I need an answer ASAP please
looks like itsa an OEM version, so there wont be a heatsink and fan, you will need to buy a seprate unit for it, probaly something like this one http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... l?TT-A4020 (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?TT-A4020)
but im sure some of the guys here can surgest a better one for you, depending on how much you want to spend on a heatsink

good hsf here i have it and it shifts a lot of heat which that chip generates http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?AC-FREEZ7P good value

yep, very cheap but great for cooling

Thank you guys, this is definately worth considering seeing as a mobo bundle from Novatech is 116 including VAT, I can build it up for about 95 now :) nice 20 quid saved there (it's for my dad by the way :P)

You've checked the motherboard will support it, maybe with a bios upgrade? :D
TheMadDutchDude

Yeah the mobo can support it, I am buying a new mobo + ram + cpu + psu and a cheap g card.. seeing he doesn't game much :D

Hold your horses then. An E2160 and cheap DDR2-667 will work out cheaper with a new motherboard and do just as well, though most new boards need SATA drives. But you should also factor in a new OEM Windows disk, unless your dad has retail Windows which will transfer.

Yeah he does have a OEM version of XP PRO which was purchased from Novatech, why is the E2160 a better deal, I see that it runs at a slower speed and I thought that it would be a worse deal, mainly because it is only.. a few quid between the CPUs!
Why are the E2160s rated so well, and the Pentium Ds worse off? I got a Pentium D and they work mighty fine :D.. but then again it is nearly a year old lol!

We did some 3DMark06 benchmarks with a D950 recently. It got about 1800 on CPU score. I think my E2140 got about 1400 stock. But I can overclock it to 1800 easily.
What I'm saying is the cheapest New Intel twin cores are as good as the old hot running Dual Cores like the D925. The only reason to buy a D925 is to upgrade an old motherboard really, which is what I thought you had in mind initially, and that's not a bad idea if it saves you getting a new Windows license.

OKay I see your point, but I am still convinced that the pent D is the better one to go for, he won't be needing to overclock it at all. All I need is a cheap option to upgrade him from a Celeron 2,533 LGA775.
His motherboard does not support a Pentium D so I need to get him a cheap upgrade for that too. He is a little tight on money at this time of year :P but he needs it for work, so I have sourced him some cheap stuff to keep him going for now.

I take your point. There's not much in it performance wise.
You will save about 60W of power with the newer types though...

LOL the power consumption doesn't bother me :P the computer will be on almost all day, every day because he works from home anyway. I know it will be quite a bit over all.. but we have 3 computers up most of the time so..
I think I will go for the D925, dispite the newer CPUs saving more power + needing to be clocked to reach same capabilities :P
Thanks for your time, I will get the 9 quid cooler from you to keep him going. Will it be good to keep it cool, just running publisher files and word processing, those sorts of things + the odd game (old games which don't need much processing power)
Thanks!

It'll keep the old boy's feet warm too. Good luck, my man. Enjoyed talking to you. 8)

Thank you for your help, are you sure it will keep it cool though?
Just to make sure it doesn't idle too high.. :S
By the way.. I modified my case lol put a wind tunnle in for the CPU, dropped my idle temps by 10 - 15 degreese!!! :O and also the fan only stays at 1700 - 1750 even during heavy gaming for hours on end.. Max temp I've hit so far was 58 (apart from the 71oC spike, I don't know what caused it though but it soon returned to 50 ish in the game!:)) amazing what a 4 quid peice of PVC piping can do, and a hole cut in the side of your case!

I'm a great fan of cooling mods. I cut better vents in case and stuff myself. Eat your heart out on temperatures. My E2140 is running at 20C right now. Must be cold in the flat...
Since this thread goes on and on, what is your dad's power supplyrating ? Is it 24 pin? Might be reusable.
TheMadDutchDude

LOL you have a E2140 though.. I got a Pent D 915 2.8 :D which is currently idling in 25 - 30, radiator is on and computer is right next to it, about 40cm away from it, sucking in all the hot air + I got messenger running and on webcam + mic to some friends :P! Can't do anything about that though! Room can't be in any other position than it is now with my brothers computer in here too.. got visiters.
The supply rating is not that good, it is an old PSU.. dating back to when I used to live back in Holland, around 4 - 5 years old now, even though it is a 350W it isn't the most efficient one. I was thinking of getting a TT420 which is the lower down model of what I have now, I got the 470 but I don't really need all that power, it was just because the old PSU I had from you guys, it was a Novatech brand and it was starting to break down after about a year of use, system readings giving the 5V rail a 5.75V rating, but I don't know if that was just the odd spike.. but it seemed to happen more and more often, the new PSU doesn't.. good old TT :D

:D You got me there.
I wouldn't mess about on power supply. Get that £43 550W Thermaltake that everyone round here likes. There's only one member of this forum who still has faith in anything smaller. And it's not me...

Something to consider.. Indeed, I might just settle for the 470 as it is sorting me out nicely, I have had no problems yet and it has been running stable for over 4 months :D
Just as a matter of interest, do you have any idea when the Xbox360's are due to drop in price or if they are going to at all, me and my brother are planning on getting one but mum won't let us! but I am going to go to some store that gives me a deal and Ill take it home, haha she won't be able to return it :D

i would go for the 580w hiper type r psu.

18-12-2007, 07:23 PM
OKay thank you Techno, but I don't think he needs that much as all he will be doing is working on some publisher files which he uses to design stuff for work, he might not need a new system after all as he is getting a new laptop free of charge from the company he works for.. but.. if it is a slow one which it is likely to be he is going to upgrade his home computer. Of course.. I will be buying from my trusty computer part suppliers.. NOVATECH! :D

Hello. The overclockers are here. Hi Teknokid! :D
That's a £9 saving on the 470W. Makes sense with sensible graphics. Yeah.
You will find the newer 945 chipset GMA950 onboard graphics are better than the older stuff. Mine will play Tomb Raider Legend at 640X480 pretty well.
Can't comment on XBOX. Don't run it. I'm an old fogey.
TheMadDutchDude
18-12-2007, 07:31 PM
LOL fair enough, I might run him on the onboard vga port for now, saves him 30 quid on a card.. :P and it will play all his games that he plays with ease.
Thanks anyway for the Xbox :P I just want to know if I am going to be able to buy it soon for a cheaper price! LOL I'm sure you're not that sold :P! My tutor in school (I'm only 14 :O) he has an Xbox360 + gold membership..

lol as our resident 360 owner :D (go home nik nax) I cant say about the price drops but i think they've just had some! or they've upgraded them and ALL of the systems come with hdmi you can get a premium with hdmi and halo 3 for about £250 on play.com last time i checked

Hey hey.. thank you :D I am looking to buy a little more local as if there is a problem with the console I can take it back to them, I do not like sending things through the post to be 100% honest with you!!
