Heres a look through the changes to mine this year:
Cant find any of it all in the old case. Upgrades are slow here, takes ages to save up enough!

Antec Sonata Piano Black Sexyness:

Since Vista is a memory pig, needed to get some cheap dual channel memory, 2 x 512mb A-Data cheapy stuff - some say its quite good - we'll see, I may get 2GB more when get new mobo and give it a test:

nice rig i must say...
are you using vista 64?
and im so jealous of everyone on here having so nice and neat looking cables even though i have just "sorted" mine out it still looks pretty poor :(

teknokid
28-12-2007, 01:05 PM
haha, i got new stuff coming today so will get up some more pics. Only 1gb ram in vista? that is one **** of a bottleneck

KaliBR
28-12-2007, 01:10 PM
thanks man, using 32bit, kinda interested and tempted to go 64 ... but as yet, well, theres more hardware I wanna buy before getting another OS.
Gotta say I was lucky, I played round with all the cable and some how they just kinda fell into place. theres a load tucked in behind the drive bays too

@ teknokid
nope, got 3GB - it was cheaper at the time to buy 2 x 512 of adata then of corsair as was skint and was getting fed up with finding that just running vista and a game would hog up a whole 2GB of ram!!!

nice, i disagree about the mobo though, i think the blitz boards by asus were a bit better, but they cost a lot more and were probs only good for extremests. still, very nice rig :)

good screen there :P and i really need to get a new case but there are no good desktop style ones for £60

you rly should, i dno how im gna fit my cube in lol

JDowdall
28-12-2007, 07:23 PM
lol a 60cm square pc is retarded! i'll have 2 work up some measurements 4 my case and make it so i can put it on its side if i wanted to

its not retarted, its ott, but gonna be awesome if i can build it

JDowdall
28-12-2007, 08:38 PM
if i make it i'll be goin for this type of surface
http://www.lacie.com/uk/products/product.htm?pid=11014 i think it'll just be perspex/acrylic over a metal shell, wat metal and thicknesses would you guys reccomend? i'll hav 2 test out wat it looks lyk, oh and where could i get the switches etc from for the front panel?

teknokid
28-12-2007, 09:15 PM
why use metal at all? you can use acrlic as a mobo tray :)

JDowdall
28-12-2007, 09:21 PM
some structural strength nd i mite freeze the acrylic with a blow torch so i'll need somethin 4 that 2 go around, im thinkin curved edges

nice, i disagree about the mobo though, i think the blitz boards by asus were a bit better, but they cost a lot more and were probs only good for extremests. still, very nice rig :)
the blitz is 1st, too expensive, and 2nd, crossfire will not work with newer PCIe 2.0 cards. i did look into Blitz, but because of that and the fact it's BIOS isn't as good, i didn't go for it. you need to see Abit's uGuru overclocking BIOS!! it's amazing!

anandtech's article (http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3142&p=12) says

We kept looking for problems - or rather, we kept expecting problems to show up as they had on previous products. However, the more we used the board, the more we became enamored of it. It was not any single feature (although the excellent µGuru technology does stand out in the crowd) that eventually won us over but the combination of several features and renewed commitment to support that had us eventually singing praises for this board.

im waiting for P45 from Abit to upgrade to :D X48 don't rock my boat, X38 doesn't upgrade anything at all (don't want crossfire, so x38 is pointless for me). P45 along with 8GB of DDR3 and may be q9450 plus 9800GTX should rock

JDowdall
28-12-2007, 09:51 PM
u seem 2 lyk anandtech a lot, it might be worth lookin round for more reviews of stuff nd the x38 has some other features to, and the P35 has crossfire

djgandy
29-12-2007, 12:47 AM
Why would you upgrade from a p35 to p45. Totally pointless.

wuyanxu
29-12-2007, 07:48 AM
u seem 2 lyk anandtech a lot, it might be worth lookin round for more reviews of stuff nd the x38 has some other features to, and the P35 has crossfire
all x38 has over p35 is PCIe 2.0 (compatible either way), full Crossfire (don't need it) and hotter running chipset.

i want to upgrade to p45 to have 1600FSB support, so that when intel brings out their refresher q9xx0 product, i can upgrade to it. but after some more thoughts, i will only upgrade to p45 if i really going to buy a penryn, otherwise p35s are good enough.

teknokid
29-12-2007, 09:29 AM
x38 can use 1600fsb :) and yeah look at other sites. id go for a skulltrail board next year (im spending all my money through the year on water cooling and gfx then for birthday/xmas all going on cpu's...)

wuyanxu
29-12-2007, 10:19 AM
X38 don't officially support 1600FSB by Intel. but motherboard makers can make them support 1600FSB through tweaks.

JDowdall
29-12-2007, 10:59 AM
lol skulltrail with dual xeon cpus it seems those days of gamers usin server boards (lyk the amd days) are comin bak

teknokid
29-12-2007, 11:09 AM
i know, but skulltrail is designed for gaming :)
just got my proc to 3.2ghz running a 400mhz fsb :)
wahooo!!
gna try the ram at 1200mhz next :)

wuyanxu
29-12-2007, 11:16 AM
3.2Ghz @ 400x8 on q6600 is easy, been running like that for 2 months now, 3.6Ghz is also very easy as long as you are either lucky or you've got a good water cooling system.
i was unlucky, and got a not-so-good q6600, so i need crazy volrages to achieve 3.6Ghz :(
teknokid, tell me, in Everest-> Motherboard -> CPU page, under CPU physical information, what reading is your "core voltage"??
mine is 1.325, meaning that's the default voltage needed at default speed. some lucky people are getting 1.0v chips, so they can overclock higher with less voltage.

teknokid
29-12-2007, 11:54 AM
myns 1.275 :) thats pretty good i think, i can get 3.2ghz easy with 1.35v and 3ghz with 1.3v (they were the first values i tried).
I only taken off the overclock coz i got the water edition of my board, and since i havent got water yet the NB is getting real toasty!!!
Did some more cable management:

wuyanxu
29-12-2007, 12:00 PM
why don't you route every single cable through the back of your motherboard tray? that way, it'd be much more tidier

teknokid
29-12-2007, 12:18 PM
coz id already put the mobo in :)
what sort of volts do you need for 3ghz etc?

JDowdall
29-12-2007, 12:31 PM
yeah i would say urs is still a bit untidy but i cant talk because my case is so messy its nt even funny lol just dun a bit of overclockin on my gfx card and eked an extra 80 mhz outta the core altho now my gfx card is running @ 42 degrees no load :(

teknokid
29-12-2007, 12:36 PM
LOL!, myns 55 degrees no load and thats very good

wuyanxu
29-12-2007, 12:48 PM
i need 1.35v to get 3Ghz 333*9, well that's the first voltage i tryed anyway. and i went straight for 3.2Ghz. 1.4v in BIOS, after vdrop, it's about 1.32v

KaliBR
29-12-2007, 12:49 PM
i'm playing with some custom cooling atm, will post some pics later if it works, think blue peter....

idle temps after a couple of hours running:

gpu: 42
gpu board: 31

(using everest)

now lets go give it some TF2 and COD4 for a while till missus moans

djgandy
29-12-2007, 12:52 PM
P45 = P35 + Official 1600 FSB support. Why pay for official support. It's like buying a Q6700 over a Q6600.

I only need 1.25v (1.3v in bios) for 333*9 stable at 3ghz but i really cant get anything stable after that on the striker.

teknokid
29-12-2007, 01:12 PM
same as you jonny for me :) 1.3v in bios for a 1.25v. i havent tried lower, i suspect it may work though....
also using the striker bios vdroop is terrible aboce 1.4v, with maximus i reckon i could be seeing 4ghz with new case and water cooling.
im still waiting for my quote!!!

sticky back plastic and a washing up liquid bottle??

KaliBR
29-12-2007, 04:07 PM
kinda, some sticky tape and a old whiskers cat biscuit box;

gpu: 66 max

gpu board: 39 max

see, the front fan blows right into the side of the gpu fan, not good as the gpu fans exhaust is 360 round its side, so was trying to had a play with putting some air flow over the mosfets only from the front fan, and let the gpu fan cool the ramsinks.

will see how it goes with some COD4 now - this proper heats it up!!

Here's my new rig (specs in sig)

http://media.storesite.co.uk/images/08-PC-PICS/

Not very tidy currently. Sorry about the bluryness my camera isn't very good so its hard to get a good picture

I had to check my fans were working when I looked at the pictures because when I took them the PC was on :P

[edit] the case is a kandalf but i took the very annoying doors off

wuyanxu
24-01-2008, 07:42 PM
my friend has a Kandalf, you've done a better job with cables than him...... although he does have 2TB of hard drive space, 5 HDD's.

PeteA
24-01-2008, 08:24 PM
It looks better in person. The front bunch of cables (ones with the IDE cable behind it are close to the front panel) the ide I might swap out for a bunched IDE.
I'm used to doing people's cabling for them. Done it loads of times although I did run out of cable ties (had to buy more).

Yeah I have one more I can fit down the bottom slots. The top slots I'll get some nice long cables and run them over the top of the PSU and round, (given that I have enough space) or maybe just along the side of the case. I'd have to buy a raid card to get the 7th in though.

Hey,

Built my system recently, just got round to cleaning the cabling to improve the airflow. It got me a few degreees. Cabling is still at bit of a mess, but for my first build it went well. Now the cables arn't practically blocking the intake fan. The graphics card prevents me from easily routing the HDD satas around the back. Also the GFX card blocks 2 sata ports, so with 2 hdd's and 2 dvd drives they are all used. Also, to give me some room for the many, MANY extra cables on the PSU, I removed the floppy tray.

Thermaltake Tsunami Dream
Intel Q6600 with Thermaltake Maxorb Cooler
Thermaltake Toughpower 650 Watt
BFG OC2 nVidia 8800GT (FREAKING HUGE!)
Asus P5K Premium MoBo
2 x Samsung Lightscribe DVD Writer drives
80Gb Maxtor HDD for OS
250 GB Maxtor HDD for everything else.
All drives are SATA2

is that aftermarket cooler? coz my gtx is same length as normal ultras...

PeteA
30-01-2008, 12:05 PM

wuyanxu

not YOUR's, it's OUR GTX

very nice build, except DO try to cable manage more, and the reason graphics card is blocking your SATA sockets is because the motherboard wasn't as well thought out.

teknokid
30-01-2008, 03:09 PM
Sorry, our GTX is HUGE.
i got my all my fans in my case turned right down, almost silent, but the gtx is getting roasty.

31-01-2008, 05:15 PM
guys!! im so happy lol

today i connected a front usb pannel to mobo, done alittle but not my best at cable managing tucking some cables reaching to mobo under the graphics card

my GPU droped 3c and my CPU has droped to 31-31-26-26 and i think i can get it lower than this... i only done alittle bit of what i could of done, now gonna test the USB hopefully it works :) but if it dosent im still proud of the temp drops

brb gonna get dads digital camer a :)

what do you guys think about RAM?
ive got two slots left on my board, should i go for higher than DDR2 6400? like corsair dominators?

PeteA
31-01-2008, 06:02 PM
Should have got dominators before you spent the money on the 2GB XMS2 (soon 4GB).

It really depends on what your motherboard can support. If it can only support 800FSB theres not much point in getting 1066

teknokid
31-01-2008, 06:06 PM
