HI ALL, I HAVE A IRIVER PMP140 AND I RECENTLY UPDATED THE FIRMWARE FROM THEIR WEBSITE. AFTER DOING THIS MY PLAYER STARTED TO DISTPLAY THE ERROR MESSAGE "BOOT FAILURE".
IT STATES THAT THE SYSTEM FILE HAS AN ERROR. I HAVE TRIED NEARLY EVERYTHING TO SORT IT OUT, FORMATTED IT IN FAT32, DOWNLOADED NEW FIRMWARE FROM THE US WEBSITE AS THE UK SUPPORT WEBSITE IS RUBBISH, TRIED EVERY COMBINATION OF DRIVER SOFTWARE I COULD FIND AND ITS STILL NO USE TO ME.
PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN. I AM AFTER SOMESORT OF MASTER RESET SEQUENCE (I HAVE TRIED THE RESET BUTTON ON THE BOTTOM) OR SOME SOFTWARE THAT I CAN LOAD ONTO IT SO IT WILL WORK.
CHEERS
ANDY
P.S. THE FIRMWARE VERSION THAT IS BEING DISTPLAYED IS VER 2.04

I see the support page is here:

Regardless, after the FAT32 Format, you will need need to copy over a system file "iRiverSys" from somewhere. Did you get a support CD?

I think you need to fix your caps lock key before you do anything else.

i looked at the website where you directed me and its the support page that i have already found.
i have tried the boot failure topic dated 03.12.2007
i have also tried the firmware update dated 03.12
2007
neither of these fixed my system. i don't consider myself to be a techno mong so i recon i was doing it right.
this only happened after i updated with the 2.04 firmware.
if you have any other sugestions that may help please post.
cheers

The system file is on this support page:
http://www.iriver.com/support/down_view.asp?idx=874
I see the download is called Sysfile.zip
That is essential if it's like my old iPod. Think of it as the operating system.
EDIT: I just read the manual, looks like you can only format FAT32 properly in 98SE or ME. XP runs into the 32GB limitation. Nightmare...

I works, it's just a blank page :P
I'm glad you appreciated my advice. It's now easier for others to read your post and it doesnt look like you are shouting.
I'll be out for beers later :)
Have a good new years.

This 40GB FAT32 format is elusive, even for people like myself who can capitalise and punctuate correctly...
Seems you COULD make a special 98SE boot CD with an improved Format program on it. From Bootdisk.com, I expect. And I have seen Partition Magic on magazine Cover Disks often enough.
But here's a utility called fat32format that seems to do the trick:

Don't know if anyone else has a better idea... :?

Steve, you are the man!
I tried what you said in your last post and followed the link for that fat32format program, ran it and it worked.
I am overjoyed with the sucess.
I had tried the fat 32 thing before using a mates computer loaded with windows 98 but it obvioulsly didn't do the job.
Thanks once again.
