I own an EMACHINES 420 running on a IM845GV Motherboard. I installedproduct code RAM-21/51s 512 mb DDR ram a year and a half ago without problems. I tried to replace the original 256ram with a RAM-21/1GB 1 gigabyte ddr but it keeps throwing up POST message 28 "autosize ram" 1beep.3 beeps.3beeps.1 beep. has anyone any ideas? both new strips of memory supplied by Novatech. 1GB strip gives same warning if used on its own Replace either or both of original ram and all ok
have you tried putting the settings in manually? and (more importantly) have you checked in your manual that the board supports 1GB sticks?

This could be that your mainboard does not support the RAM module you wish to use. This is fairly common.
The first thing to check is exactly what your mainboard supports in the way of RAM modules. This can normally be found in the mianboard manual. It will normally say that each slot in your mainboard can support up to a certain amount of ram in either Double sided, single sided or both.
Once you know this, you can then see if this requirement matches up with the RAM module you bought. For example your board might not support 1gb Dimm which is possible if its old system.
So if after checking this the Module you have is exactly right to be supported by your mainboard you may need a BIOS update to resolve this.
Can you find out exactly what ram your mainboard supports or can you tell us exactly what make and model board you are using and we might be able to find out.
If its old mainboard its more likely an issue between board and 1gb sticks but lets find out first what your board supports.

To Coops. The computer was purchased new in January 2004 and the motherboard has two DIMM sockets, expandable up to 2GB using 1GB DDR SDRAM modules. Each DIMM socket supportsthe following - 184-pin 2.5v DIMM with gold plated contacts. 200/266/333 MHz Non-ECC unbuffered DDR SDRAM. Single or double sided Dimm in the following sizes 64MB-8Mbit x 64, 128MB 16Mbit x 64, 256MB - 32Mbit x 64, 512MB - 64Mbit x 64, 1GB - 128 Mbit x 64. My system uses Phoenix BIOS.
The motherboard offers the following features- Micro ATX form factor, Intel Pentium 4 Processor in th ith mPGA 478 pin package. Two DIMM sockets, expandable up to 2GB using 1GB DDR SDRAM Modules, intel 82845gv Graphics Memory Controller Hub, Intel 82801DB I/O Controller Hub (GMCH), SMSC LPC47M192/LPC47M997 super I/O controller, System BIOS and Video BIOS shadow ram, plug and play BIOS featureetc etc etc.
The first strip of memory when placed in the computer created an error message , I returned it, was told that there was none of that stock left and then given the present strip. This gives the POST error Beeps if used on its own or with the existing strips, the additional512 strip that I purchased from you in September 2004 worked without any problem. is there a possibility that this strip is of a different manufacturer and this is causing the problem or could the strip be at fault. Any assistance would be invaluable as at present strip is u/s. Thanks for your response - Iwill try to phone you tomarrowto discuss if this is OK. amworried about your seven dayreturn policy - I had to wait 40 mins when I returned strip last week which make this awkward with work commitments. Look forward to your further assistance.

OK can you provide details of the RAM module you have.
As sometimes we can have two different makes in stock i want to make sure i know which module you have.
Can you provide any and all detail you have on the RAM, such as make, part numbers etc. Is it single side or double sided etc that way i can find identical piece here.

The original ram in sep 04 was RAM-21/51S and the description was 32*64 512MB 184 PIN 2.5V SINGL.
The new part was RAM-21/1GB 128*64 1GB 184 PIN DDR this part did not work and was replaced by a double sided part with a sticker on it DDR1GBPC2700 and in small print DDR !GB PC2700 333MHZ MT on the end of the board is B6U405F
Is this any help or would you like me to bring the whole lot in?
regards
Roger
