Using a Bravo AMD Athlon 2800 which has four USB 2.0 ports on the rear end I have attached an external drive via a Novatech external drive housing and if I switch this on aafter starting the PC I get a message stating that this drive can go faster on USB 2.0 and directs me to the VIA USB 2.0 Enhanced controller with 6 ports. I don't know how to access these ports but I thought the device was connected to a USB 2.0 port already. If I swirch the external drive on before starting the PC I do not get the message and the working speed of the disc is apparent. What is the answer to this problem please?

This is a bit of an odd problem that you are having. Up until the last sentence i was thinking the problem is just the drivers and the below link would fix it.

However you also said this.

Chas Gaskin.
Because the drive is already switched on i can understand why you are not getting the error message (the drive is already detected and you only get these messages when new hardware is detected), however i dont understand why the drive's working speed is different.
This first thing that i would do is have a look through the above link and check whats sugested. If this does not help please can you post the stock code and the serial number of the PC so i can look into the problem more.

Hallo Danno, Many thanks for your reply but I'm sorry to say that I did not get anything helpful from the links you gave me. Re the speed of this device I do a regular disc imgage for the complete system using the external HD and if I start having switched the HD on after the PC the programme tells me it will take about 3 hours, but if it is already switched on before I start the PC the programme tells me it will take about 15 mins!. The Stck Code for my machine is PC-0382T and the Serial Number is 7046747-002 I have attached to the USB a Canon scanner, a Lexmark Printer, a Speedtouch ADSL modem and of course the Hard Disc drive. I hope the above info will enable you to sove this problem as whilst it is no real hassle I would like to have it working properly.
Thanks again, Chas

Hi Chas
Bit of a crazy one really.
If it is all working fine when switched on before the machine, essentially we can rule out any actual failings with the hardware.
I would imagine that plugging it in after the machine is switched on could be forcing it into some sort of Legacy mode perhaps? (hence only the 1.1 transfer speeds).
Are all your other devices USB 1.1? It would be handy to know if any are USB 2 and what kind of transfer speeds you are getting from them.
Danno, are there any recent BIOS updates for this board?

Hallo Danno, As far as I know all my USB devices are USB 2.0. but since last talking to you I have discivered that when I attach my Canon Camera to a USB port I get the same message saying the device could work faster if attached to a USB2 port. It is difficult to judge the speed of transfer for the scanner and the printer but the external disc is noticeable. Incidentally I have now discovered that my IC card readers are not working at all. I have a front USB port that has become damaged and cannot be used and in fact a USB plug cannot be inserted in it but I do not know if this is influencing the performance in any way as it seems to come from a saparate connection on the motherboard. Sorry to cause you any trouble! Chas.
