Hi guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my pc with a new mobo, mem, and cpu. I had a new camcorder for xmas and would like to edit the content on the PC, my current one is not up to it. Budget is £200 - £250

I have a AMD Sempron 3300+ 2.0 ghz, 512 RAM.

Is it best to go for AMD or Intel and what are the speed differences compared to price?

Your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Andy.

Is it overly technical to ask what your motherboard make and model is here?

You might have some good upgrade options if it is AM2 socket. Like doing a bios update, adding a dual core processor, memory and a firewire card.

Could save you buying a new copy of Windows. :D

cpu-z will tell you this: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Sorry friend, I missed your post today. Think we can forget about upgrades to a socket 754. :?

Hmm...that AVCHD high def camera format looks pretty demanding. Talk is you need better than Dual Core Athlon 4800+ to decode it.

That equates to Core 2 Duo E6420 in Intel processors. Plenty of memory and a big hard drive too, I expect. I don't know if a particular graphic card will help.

Now of course, when you look at bundles, you need to consider the size for your case, either mATX or full ATX size, and a suitable connection, which I would guess is some version of firewire.

This needs more looking into.

System7,

Thanks for your help.

I have gone for this config.

ASU-P5KPLV ASUS P5KPL-VM, IG31, S 775
IL-Q6600E INTEL QUAD CORE Q6600 G0
4 gig of memory.

Managed to get the lot for 260 a bit over budget but hopefully will be able to cope with the AVCHD editing.

The cam transfers files through USB.

Any thoughts, have I made a terrible mistake. You view would be appreciated I can always return the good unopened.

Thanks.

Looks very nice to me. :D

I'd always use a configurator for memory, but you can always exchange:

If you're re-using an old case, you want to think about upping power supply (24 pin + 4 pin CPU) and cooling, especially if you're adding graphics later. And you'll only have one IDE slot for an old DVD drive, so you'll need a newer SATA Hard Drive. And new Windows, I expect.
