Hi,

Just a quick question...

Recently my computer hasn't be installing USB drivers automaticly. It asks me to install manualy. First it asks for drivers for the disk drive and then drivers for a generic volume. This happens everytime I insert a USB storage drive.

I installed some nvidia storage drivers recently. I think it my have accured when I installed them but I tried uninstalling the drivers but the problem still persists.

Anyone got any ideas on this?

Thanks a lot.

These were AHCI hotplugging drivers for SATA2, I expect. Did you enable the setting in the bios?

Seems they work best with a fresh install at the F6 prompt. Sounds FUBARed to me, but I don't really know, never used them...

Thanks for your reply.

They were just nvidia IDE controller drivers, but they did enable hotplugging for SATA. No, I didn't change anything in BIOS.

Is there a way to turn on/off the automatic driver installation in XP?

Solved the problem.

I used a program called dial-a-fix to sort out some problems with windows update. It sorted out the windows update but it deleted the contents of the catroot2 folder, which made all my drivers unsigned, including microsoft ones. So it wasn't installing the USB storage drivers because they weren't signed. So I ran dial-a-fix again and it solved the problem. I think my computer didn't reinstall the catroot2 folder completely the first time I ran dial-a-fix because there were files missing.

Anyway, thought I'd reply to my own question because doesn't everyone just hate it when a forum has the question you want to ask but not the answer.

Well, if you'd mentioned dial-a -fix in the first place, I could have told you that straightaway...

Ok, I'm lying. Nice fix, anyway.
